Olympus has formally announced its second lens of the day, which consists of the M.Zuiko Digital ED 7-14mm f/2.8 PRO, a product whose development was confirmed back in 2014.

World’s first 8mm f/1.8 fisheye lens has become official today and it is being followed by another wide-angle PRO optic with a bright aperture. The family of PRO lenses is growing and Olympus has its own “holy trinity” of zoom lenses with a constant maximum aperture of f/2.8. It was confirmed in 2014, but its official announcement has taken place only today: it is the M.Zuiko Digital ED 7-14mm f/2.8 PRO lens and it is aimed at Micro Four Thirds cameras.

Olympus 7-14mm f/2.8 PRO lens will offer a 35mm equivalent of 14-28mm.

Olympus finally introduces M.Zuiko Digital ED 7-14mm f/2.8 PRO lens

The Olympus 7-14mm f/2.8 PRO lens follows into the footsteps of the 7-14mm f/4 optic for Four Thirds cameras. The Micro Four Thirds version will also offer a high image quality, but it will do so while being 1-stop faster.

The PRO-series is extending and it will allow photographers to benefit from a so-called holy trinity. Users will be able to cover wide-angle to telephoto focal lengths with only three lenses bearing a constant maximum aperture of f/2.8. The 7-14mm joins the 12-40mm and 40-150mm optics, therefore Micro Four Thirds owners will have a 35mm focal length equivalent of 14-300mm at their disposal using this trio.

Just like its PRO siblings, the Olympus 7-14mm f/2.8 PRO lens is weathersealed, so it will be resistant to dust, splashes, and temperatures as low as -10 degrees Celsius / 14 degrees Fahrenheit.

According to the Japanese manufacturer, the optic has a minimum focusing distance of 20 centimeters and an internal focusing system which prevents the front lens element from moving when focusing.

The internal design of the optic comprises 14 elements in 11 groups. It includes three Super ED elements, two HR elements, one ED element, one DSL element, two aspherical ED elements, and one aspherical element.

The optic is coated in the Zuiko Extra-Low Reflection Optical (ZERO) coating in order to keep reflections under control so that ghosting and flare are greatly reduced.

A distance scale is available on the lens along with an autofocus / manual focus switch. An L-Fn button has been added to the lens and a custom function can be assigned using the camera.

Olympus 7-14mm f/2.8 PRO lens measures 79mm in diameter and 106mm in length. It weighs 534 grams / 1.18 lbs and it comes with a built-in hood that cannot be removed. It will be released on the market in late June 2015 for a price of $1,299.99 and it is available for pre-order right now at Amazon.
