Canon EF-S 20mm f/2.8 STM lens patented for APS-C DSLRs

Canon has patented an EF-S 20mm f/2.8 STM wide-angle prime lens for the company’s EOS DSLR cameras with APS-C-sized image sensors.

A lot of lenses have been patented in recent times by a multitude of companies, including Canon. The world’s biggest camera and lens vendor will not put an end to product development and a new patent is a testimony to this fact.

The Canon EF-S 20mm f/2.8 STM lens has had its patent approved in Japan and it announces itself as a wide-angle prime optic for DSLRs with APS-C sensors that will deliver a fairly bright aperture for low-light shooting.

A new wide-angle prime lens could be released by Canon at some point in the future. The product in question has been patented in Japan and it appears to consist of a 20mm f/2.8 optic designed for EF-S-mount DSLRs.

It will offer a 35mm focal length equivalent of 32mm when mounted on DSLR cameras with APS-C-sized image sensors. Its aperture is bright enough for indoor, street as well as landscape photography in low-light conditions, so it could become a versatile lens for EOS 7D Mark II users.

The Japanese company is already offering an f/2.8 STM wide-angle prime lens for EOS-series DSLRs with APS-C sensors. However, the product has a focal length of 24mm and it is pancake unit thanks to its length of 22.8mm / 0.9 inches. Unfortunately, the patented Canon EF-S 20mm f/2.8 STM lens will not be a pancake model as its patent application says that its length stands at 64mm / 2.51 inches. The EF-S 24mm f/2.8 STM pancake lens is available at Amazon for a price under $150.

This wide-angle prime lens will offer smooth, silent autofocus

Canon filed for the patent on December 6, 2013. The regulatory agency in Japan approved it on June 18, 2015. The wide-angle prime comes with a Stepping Motor which is said to deliver quiet and smooth autofocusing.

As usual, we need to remind you that patenting a product does not mean that the product will be released in the near future or during the following years. Companies are experimenting in order to see if a product is feasible for the market, so do not keep your breath over the launch of the Canon EF-S 20mm f/2.8 STM lens.

Meanwhile, stay tuned to Camyx for further news and rumors from the digital imaging world!
