Nikon reaches another lens production milestone: 95 million lenses for ILCs

As usual, Nikon praises the technologies available in its Nikkor-branded optics in the official press release. Some of the technologies include the Nano Crystal Coat and Phase Fresnel. The former is an anti-reflection coating that cuts down flare and ghosting, while the latter consists of elements that suppress chromatic aberration and reduce the weight and size of a lens.

Whereas the Nano Crystal Coat is available in most recent Nikkor lenses, the Phase Fresnel elements are part of a select club. This technology was introduced for the first time in the AF-S Nikkor 300mm f/4E PF ED VR lens at CES 2015 in early January 2015.

Just like other lenses, the AF-S Nikkor 300mm f/4E PF ED VR has helped Nikon reach another milestone in lens production. As of mid-July 2015, the Japanese digital imaging giant has manufactured more than 95 million optics for interchangeable lens cameras.

Previous milestone reached in November 2014 by Nikon

The previous milestone consisted of 90 million lenses and it was achieved in November 2014, roughly eight months ago. Before that, there were 85 million units in January 2014 and 80 million units in June 2013.

The list continues with 75 million milestone in November 2012, 70 million milestone in June 2012, and 65 million milestone in October 2011, respectively.

Usually, Nikon reaches a couple of lens production milestones per year, the exception being 2013. It remains to be seen whether or not the five months left of 2015 will be enough to reach another one.

What is the competition doing?

Canon is Nikon’s fierce rival as well as the biggest camera and lens vendor on the market. In early July 2015, the EOS maker confirmed the production of 110 million optics for interchangeable lens cameras.

The manufacturer has reached this production milestone sometime in June 2015 and the 110 millionth lens to be produced has been designated as the EF 11-24mm f/4L USM, one of the best optics on the market, according to reviewers.

We will let you know as soon as Canon and Nikon achieve their next milestones, so keep an eye on Camyx!
