Canon has patented three new cine lenses, that is the CN-E 18-85mm T2.8, CN-E 20-100mm T2.8, and CN-E 20-130mm T2.8-3.5 optics, for the company’s Cinema EOS cameras.

Cinematographers are still in awe following Samyang’s introduction of three Rokinon XEEN cine primes that will be affordable when compared to their competitors. The awe will remain in place for quite a while, as Samyang will announce another three XEEN lenses in early 2016.

Until then, it seems like videographers still have a lot to dream about as other companies are working on new products. New patents have surfaced on the web and they are showing Canon’s attempt to launch three new cine zoom lenses.

The EOS maker has just patented the CN-E 18-85mm T2.8, CN-E 20-100mm T2.8, and CN-E 20-130mm T2.8-3.5 and they could all be released sometime in the future.

Canon patents CN-E 18-85mm T2.8 lens for Cinema EOS cameras

The first new cine lens to be patented by Canon is the 18-85mm T2.8. This optic will be a standard zoom lens offering wide-angle to telephoto focal lengths and a constant maximum aperture of T2.8.

It will feature inner focusing and zooming mechanisms. The former means that the front element does not rotate when focusing, while the latter means that the lens does not change its dimensions when zooming in or out.

Its patent was filed on June 24, 2013, while its approval was granted on August 1, 2015.

The internal designs of the Canon CN-E 20-130mm T2.8-3.5 and CN-E 20-100mm T2.8 lenses are quite similar.

Canon CN-E 20-100mm T2.8 and CN-E 20-130mm T2.8-3.5 patented, too

The second and third lenses have been patented in the same application. The products in question are the CN-E 20-100mm T2.8 and CN-E 20-130mm T2.8-3.5 optics.

Their internal designs are fairly similar and both of them come packed with inner focusing and zooming technologies, just like their aforementioned sibling.

As you may have already noticed, the 20-100mm version’s T2.8 is constant throughout the entire focal range, while the other model has 30mm more at the telephoto end alongside a T2.8-3.5 maximum aperture.

It is unlikely that both of them will be released on the market, so Canon will have to decide which is the best solution: a more extended focal range or a faster maximum aperture.

As usual, we have to inform you that the three new Canon cine lenses may never become official. For now, they are only in development and they have a long way to go before their launch. Still, we will keep an eye on them and we will let you know what the rumor mill has to say about them.
