Sigma 50-100mm f/1.8 DC HSM Art lens becomes official

Sigma has officially announced the first 50-100mm lens with a constant maximum aperture of f/1.8, which is designed for APS-C-sized DSLR cameras.

The rumor mill has recently revealed that Sigma is working on a couple of new optics that will be introduced by the end of this week. The time has come for the gossip talks to become true, so the Japanese company has unveiled the 50-100mm f/1.8 Art-series lens.

The new optic is part of the manufacturer’s Global Vision line-up, therefore it will deliver exceptional image quality combined with impressive performances in all sorts of scenarios. Without much further ado, the Sigma 50-100mm f/1.8 DC HSM Art lens is real and is coming to a store near you soon!

Sigma introduces the rumored 50-100mm f/1.8 DC HSM Art lens

Continuing the tradition of the Global Vision, the Sigma 50-100mm f/1.8 DC HSM Art lens comes packed with cutting-edge technology in order to provide the best-possible image quality and performance.

The new Sigma 50-100mm f/1.8 DC HSM Art telephoto zoom lens will offer a 35mm equivalent of 75-150mm.

The new optic is based on an internal configuration with 21 elements divided into 15 groups. The construction includes three F Low Dispersion elements, a single Special Low Dispersion element, one high-dispersion / high-refractive index element. Together they will reduce chromatic aberrations.

Additionally, the optic comes packed with an improved Hyper Sonic Motor. The new drive is about one third slimmer than its predecessor, while offering quicker and more accurate autofocusing.

Its diaphragm includes fluorine in order to be more durable, while the aperture blades include carbon feather film that makes the lens operate in a smoother manner.

Sigma 50-100mm f/1.8 DC HSM Art lens set for a late April release date

Sigma says that the new Art-series optic features both inner zooming and focusing mechanisms. This way, its size remains unchanged when zooming, while the the front element does not rotate when focusing.

Sigma 50-100mm f/1.8 DC HSM Art lens has a minimum focusing distance of 95 centimeters. It measures 171mm in length and 94mm in diameter, while the filter thread is sized at 82mm.

Although it does not have a built-in image stabilization technology, the new optic can be considered somewhat heavy. It weighs 1.490 grams / 3.28 lbs, but this can be attributed to the bright and constant maximum aperture of f/1.8.

The Japanese manufacturer will release this telephoto zoom lens sometime in late April for a price of $1,099. The product will become available in Nikon, Sigma, and Canon DSLRs with APS-C sensors and will offer a full-frame focal length equivalent of 75-150mm.
