Panasonic 8K camera to be announced at Photokina 2016

The development of one of the first consumer cameras to record videos at 8K resolution will be confirmed this fall by Panasonic, trusted sources have just revealed.

Panasonic was among the early adopters of 4K video recording in the digital camera world. The Japan-based manufacturer introduced Lumix GH4 in May 2014, the first mirrorless camera to capture movies at such resolution.

Reports coming from insiders have revealed that the company will launch a 6K camera, most likely called Lumix GH5, sometime in the 2016 fiscal year, which ends on March 31, 2017. However, a different source is now stating that a prototype of a Panasonic 8K camera will be announced this fall.

Development of Panasonic 8K camera to be confirmed at the Photokina 2016 event

The Japanese manufacturer is allegedly working on a mirrorless camera that shoots 8K videos. The product would become official sometime this fall. Although Photokina 2016 is not mentioned, it would definitely be the right place to reveal it.

Panasonic might confirm the development of GH4’s replacement at Photokina 2016.

It is said that the device will support an 8K photo, similar to the 4K photo mod already available in multiple Panasonic shooters. In this mode, photographers are allowed to extract an 8K still from a video.

Another advantage of the mode is that it supports a refocus technology. Users can select where to focus by simply touching the image on their screen. As a result, it is likely that the device will come packed with a touchscreen.

The source added that a single image captured in 8K photo mode will have a size of 33.5 megapixels. This is huge and owners will need huge SD cards in order to make sure that they have enough space to experiment with 8K technology.

Another information shared by the source says that the Panasonic 8K camera was supposed to be released in 2020. However, its launch date has been moved forward to 2018.

If its release date is actually 2018, then we will only get an announcement of the development of the device this September at Photokina 2016. As a result, the official product launch event will likely take place at a later date.

We can speculate that a working prototype will not be displayed at the event and that people will simply look at a mock-up. Thankfully, it is still too early to jump to conclusions.

More details and time are needed in order to find out which source is right or maybe Panasonic will release a 6K camera by the end of this year, while scheduling the 8K camera for a 2018 launch.
