After years of rumors and speculation, Samyang has finally unveiled the company’s first lenses that support autofocus. The two optics with autofocus technology are the 14mm f/2.8 ED AS IF UMC and 50mm f/1.4 AS IF UMC and both are aimed at Sony FE-mount mirrorless cameras.

Samyang or Rokinon, depending on what branding the company chooses for its products, is quite popular among photographers who choose to buy more affordable third-party lenses for their cameras.

Perhaps the most requested feature by its fans consists of autofocus support. Well, after so much time and so many demands, the manufacturer has finally delivered. Its first optics with AF technology are here and they consist of the 14mm f/2.8 ED AS IF UMC and 50mm f/1.4 AS IF UMC primes.

The new Samyang 14mm f/2.8 and 50mm f/1.4 lenses have been designed for Sony mirrorless cameras with full-frame sensors. However, the FE-mount is similar to the E-mount, so photographers will be able to use them on APS-C-sized cameras, too, albeit they will have to take into consideration the crop factor.

The 14mm f/2.8 ED AS IF UMC and 50mm f/1.4 AS IF UMC lenses are the first Samyang lenses with autofocus support.

The official press release reads that the South Korean company has specifically created the optics for mirrorless cameras. They will deliver a high image quality, like nothing users have seen in this category, says Samyang.

Image sharpness is top-notch, while the bright apertures will provide stunning bokeh. A high optical performance is ensured by the internal configuration, which includes aspherical elements that reduce chromatic aberration and light dispersion.

The 14mm f/2.8 ED AS IF UMC prime is great for cityscapes, landscapes, interiors, architecture, and other photography types that require a wide focal length. On the other hand, the 50mm f/1.4 AS IF UMC prime can be used for portrait photography even in low-light conditions.

Samyang’s first autofocus lenses will become available this July

Samyang has been in the imaging sector for more than 40 years, but these are its first autofocus optics. The company confirms that the products can work along with contrast-detect and phase-detect sensors, delivering quick, precise autofocusing in both cases.

Both the Samyang 14mm f/2.8 and 50mm f/1.4 lenses come with a filter diameter measuring 67mm and a minimal design. These products have a metal-housing, so they are durable products.

The focusing system is internal and, as usual, this means that the front element will remain in place when focusing. The manufacturer’s first AF optics will be released on the market sometime in July.

Price details are unknown, but they will be revealed in due time, therefore stay close to Camyx to find them out!
