ir Sony a6000 vs a6300 - Full Comparison News and Reviews

As a follow-up to one of the most popular mirrorless cameras (Sony Alpha A6000), Sony Alpha A6300 had a difficult task, but it pulled it off with a lot of new features and an improved performances. For the most part, the A6300 performs almost identically to its predecessor. It’s fast at most operations but it focuses a little slow in low light situations. Externally, it also shares a lot of design with A6000 but there are a couple of physical differences, like the addition of sealing against dust and moisture. Ergonomically, though, there are no differences between the A6000 and A6300. Overall, this is a fantastic camera for any kind of photography.

2. Sony Alpha A6000 – Still Amazing Camera

ir Sony a6000 vs a6300 - Full Comparison News and Reviews

Very competent mirrorless camera, Sony Alpha A6000, has seriously fast continuous shooting and extensive feature set. Its autofocus system, image quality, and design are improved upon its predecessor. It has an excellent built-in electronic viewfinder and really good body size. It’s not too big as a DSLR, but it’s not too small either and while lightweight, it still feels solid in hands. Aside from continuous shooting, the Sony A6000 performs really well and it’s equipped with the Bionz X processor. However, while it delivers excellent image quality in good light situations, in low light photos just don’t remain as sharp. Once you hit ISO 800 JPEG images get soft, but you can still get some usable images up to ISO 12800.

Despite small flaws, the Sony Alpha A6000 is a great overall camera, especially for more experienced photographers who are looking for a smaller camera than DSLR.

The Sony A6000 has some great specifications, but as its successor, Sony A6300 is enriched with even better specs and we can already see which camera is better. But let’s go through and see how they stack up in each category.

Feature Comparison

SeSony nsor

The newer model has a newly developed 24 MP APS-C sized Exmor CMOS sensor which maximizes efficiency and overall performance but it has a little lower resolution than its predecessor A6000 (24.2 MP vs 24.3 MP). However, a slightly lower resolution shouldn’t be the problem because the processor of the A6300 cooperates with the updated Bionz X processor that allows a lighter resolution and decreases the production of noise. It is a clear win for the Sony Alpha A6300.

ISO

While the A6000 has limited ISO sensitivity range to 100-2566, the A6300 has an expanded ISO sensitivity of 10051200. With the cooperation of sensor and updated processor of A6300, we can get clean images at the mid-to-high ISO values so its maximum effective ISO score is 1437, while the A6000’s max effective ISO score is 1347. The winner in this category is clearly A6300.

White Balance Presets

With a slightly higher number of white balance presets, the A6300 has a little more control over light temperature than its predecessor. Slight edge to the Sony Alpha A6300.

AF Points

In this category, we can see a huge difference. While the older model A6000 has 198 phase detection points and 25 contrast detection points, the newer model was improved in this area too and it has a tremendous 425 phase detection points and 169 contrast detection points. With more AF points it is easier to detect and track your subject so the prize goes to the Sony Alpha A6300 in this category.

LCD Screen

The Sony Alpha A6300 has a constant live-view continuous shooting with an electronic viewfinder and LCD up to 8 fps. This kind of speed provides the real-time shooting experience. This was added to the newer model which ensured victory for the Sony Alpha A6300 in this category.

Video Resolution

We have a huge difference between these two cameras in this category. While the A600 is capable of recording 1080p HD videos, the newer model A6300 is capable of shooting and recording internal high-resolution 4K video with full pixel readout in the Super 35mm format (and with no pixel binning). It’s clear which camera is the winner in this category.

Dimensions

So much improved A6300 is surprisingly larger than its predecessor A6000. With smaller body (4.7 x 2.6 x 1.8in to 5.2 x 5.7 x 6.2in) the older model takes the prize in this category.

Built-in Flash

Both A6000 and A6300 have the built-in flash with the same range of 6m (19 feet). Since there is no difference in this category, we have to say it is a tie.

Available Lenses

The total number of available lenses for both A6000 and A6300 is 59, but since neither of the bodies has a built-in image stabilization it would be good to have lenses with Optical stabilization feature, when it comes to those lenses, the current total number is 22 for both cameras. Once again, we have a category with no winner.

Microphone port

A microphone port allows connecting external high-end or specialized microphones which prevent motor noise appearing on your recording. The newer and improved model has that feature, but the older one doesn’t so it is a clear win for the Sony Alpha A6300 in this category too.

 Continuous Shooting

When you want to catch action shots fast continuous shooting is more than useful. Both A6000 and A6300 have really fast 11 fps continuous shooting which leaves us with no winner in this category.

Battery Life

Neither A6000 nor A6300 have an impressive battery life but the newer model A6300 comes out across with life of 400shots compared to its predecessor’s battery life of 360 shots. Obviously, the winner is A6300.

Shutter Speed

When it comes to shutter speed, both cameras have exactly the same specs. From 30 seconds for long exposures and blurred motion to 1/4000s for freezing the motion in front of the camera. This category is a tie.

Weight

This category isn’t the most important until you have to carry your camera around for a whole day. Neither A6000 nor A6300 is too heavy, but the older model with a slightly lighter body (16.5 oz to 118.3 oz) comes out as the winner.

Viewfinder

Both cameras have the full 100% viewfinder coverage which makes it easier for photographers to compose the image correctly when capturing the photo. With no difference in this category, it has to be a tie again.

How these cameras perform in certain types of photography?

Althrough

PORTRAIT PHOTOGRAPHY

With large, high resolution sensors that provide shallow depth of field and blurry background you can get really nice portrait photos. Both cameras are good candidates for this type of photography.

STREET PHOTOGRAPHY

Face detection focusing can be really helpful for street photography because you can focus on framing and other adjustments the photo while the camera does the focusing for you. Large sensor ensures a good low light image quality and it also provides shallow depth of field and blurry background when needed. An articulating screen gives you the flexibility to shoot from any position which is really useful for streets photography. Having the same features needed for street photography, both A6000 and A6300 are good candidates for this type of photography.

SPORTS PHOTOGRAPHY

When you want to catch an action shot, you need your cameras shutter speed and continuous shooting both fast. Al the other features in the table can certainly be useful, but without those two you just can’t get an action shot. Both cameras have fast continuous shooting and shutter speed which makes them good candidates for the sports photography. However, with an advantage of 169 AF points over A6000’s 25, A6300 can detect and track the object a lot better.

DAILY PHOTOGRAPHY

The most important thing, when it comes to daily photography, is practicality of the camera. For carrying around a whole day, every day you want the smallest and the lightest camera possible. Both of these cameras can serve you just fine, but they are definitely not perfect. If this is the only type of photography you are going to use your camera for, you should probably keep looking.

LANDSCAPE PHOTOGRAPHY

Large sensors of both cameras provide high pixel quality and with the resolution of somewhat 24 MP both cameras are great for landscape photography. The only difference is in Environmental sealing. This is certainly a good thing to have because the landscape photographs are taken outdoors and you should be prepared for all kinds of weather condition. The A6300 has it and A6000 doesn’t, which makes the newer model a little better for this type of photography.

Sony Alpha A6000 and Sony Alpha A6300 Photographer’s Stories

Sony Alpha A6000 review

This camera is really easy to use and features are the best I ever had. It’s even great for beginner photographers because you can set it to an Intelligent Auto and it will still take great photos. Autofocus is amazing, colors are crisp, and the camera itself is really fast. I initially wanted something smaller than DSLR but now I just don’t like how small it is. It fits perfectly only in my child’s hands but it performs perfectly so I guess I can deal with the size.

Sony Alpha A6300 review

Hours of YouTube reviews got me to deciding to get this camera and let me tell you something, you defiantly can’t go wrong with this perfect little piece of technology. It’s one of the best buys for recording and image quality. Dynamic range is amazing, detail and sharpness are literally perfect and it’s almost unreal how something so small like this camera can provide something like 4K videos. This camera meets every single of my expectations!

Conclusion

The Sony Alpha A6000 was one of the most popular mirrorless cameras. It still is a great camera, really easy to use and with a lot of features, but when its successor, the Sony Alpha A6300, appeared, the A6000 was kind of thrown into its shade. No wonder when the A6300 is a lot improved version of an already great camera.  But, as usual, all those improvements come with a much higher price so if you are just an amateur photographer the A6000 can serve you just fine. You don’t have to waste more money when you don’t even know what you are giving it for. However, if you are a professional photographer you already know that buying the Sony Alpha A6300 is money well spent.
