Product Photography for E-Commerce: Getting it Right

As someone who owns or works at an e-commerce store, you already know that product photography for your e-commerce store is the life of the business- literally.

As the brick and mortar for a successful e-commerce store, your product images must always breathe life! With Threekit Visual Configuration, your product catalogs no longer have to be boring.

Here are some game-changing tips to get your product photography for your e-commerce store right, once and for all:

  • Help Your Customers ‘Touch’ their Products

As potential shoppers scroll onto your website, their biggest grumble would be that they cannot touch and feel the product before they buy it.

Why don’t you play this problem to your advantage by creating means through which they can touch the products with excellent 3D visualization? Of course, you’ve seen a 3D animation or movie, and you can attest to how much ‘in front of you’ everything seems to be playing out; and boy, that is fun!

That innate desire to touch, to feel, can and should be used to your advantage, as an e-commerce owner, through your product photography.

  • Mix-and-match: Lifestyle images plus clean product shots

E-commerce product photography offers you two main options: lifestyle images or product shots. Before you rack your brain on which would be better for your e-commerce store, I’m here to tell you, you can use them both! For each product shown on your website, a good tip to make your clients swoon over your products is to take both lifestyle and product shots.

A typical product image would show your product alone, placed against a plain (most likely, white) background. Shots of the product can then be taken from different angles to give shoppers a full glimpse into your product’s outlook.

Lifestyle photographs deal with the problem of not being able to touch the products, hence showing the product from different angles, allowing shoppers to zoom in on ultra-high definition photos, is akin to picking up the product in a physical store and inspecting it closely before making your purchase.

  • Natural Lighting: A Cheap Way to Slay those Images!

Not everyone has spare cash to purchase an elaborate lighting setup. If you fall under that category, it should be no bother you at all because the light you need, can flood into your room when you open the windows or better still, you could step outside with your products!

It is best to make use of natural lighting during the early morning and late afternoon periods, because the weather is calmer (e.g. less sun) and it produces a subtle, natural feel; similar to what indoor lighting can give you.

  • Invest in Your Camera

I know, I know; our smartphones are the life! However, nothing still takes the place of quality photography with high definition lens cameras.

With wide-angle lenses, your lifestyle images jump into your consumers’ faces, prompting them to make purchases; and with an amazing zoom function, you wouldn’t have to adjust your tripod so much when you want to take pictures at differing distances. Are your products quite small? You might want to invest in a macro lens too!

Tip: ‘I love blurry images’, said no one ever! A tripod helps stabilize your camera and produce ultra-clear, focused images.

  • Your products are your e-commerce store’s models: Prep them

You have to see your products as actual models and prep them as such. Models go through extensive coaching sessions before strutting on the runway; you need to take your products through coaching sessions as well.

Before taking pictures, examine the products to see if there’s anything that might look out of place; even a little speck. You wouldn’t have to spend hours retouching- and risk making the products look doctored if you take away those little signs of imperfection e.g. price tags or stickers, improper fittings, and so on. Remember: those images are what shoppers will use to judge your products.

Visual Configuration concentrates on custom product building, such that customers have a full grasp of what end products look like. Ultimately, this reduces the product return rate, because clients get exactly what they order for!
