My “Actual” Favorite Subjects & How I Edit Vacation Pictures

All kidding aside, while I did LOVE and enjoy photographing the chipmunks that I shared yesterday, my favorite subjects as you know are my daughters Ellie and Jenna.  They are the reason I have such a passion for photography.

I decided that since it is a holiday weekend to take this weekend to keep things lighter and just share pictures. These are from our family vacation a week ago to Northern Michigan or “Up North” as Michiganders call it.

Some of these pictures are snapshots, some closer to portraits…  Settings are all over the map as were the weather conditions.  We had cold with clouds and rain one day, and another day was full sun.  I brought lots of lenses with me.  But the ones I used most were: Canon 16-35L and the occasional 15mm Fisheye for the wide angle pictures.  The closeups mainly were shot with the Canon 50L or the Canon 135L.  And the snapshots around town were often with the Tamron 28-300mm zoom. As far as processing, I had over 600 pictures from the trip.  So I used Autoloader in Photoshop and I quickly edited running my big batch action (mainly using Color Burst from the Complete Workflow). For vacation pictures I rarely take the time to edit skin, take out creases and shadows under the eyes, etc. I just want good exposure and color. Keep it simple! It still took me a few days to get through all 600 as my twins are not back to school yet so I just had evenings to edit.  Hope this information on how I shoot and edit vacation pictures helps someone.

I would love you to leave any questions or thoughts in the “comment section” of my blog. And yes, that is me with Jenna (the last picture in the last “blog it board”) – looking at it now I am thinking I should have retouched myself 1st – too late.

These are awesome!! The first set is just so vibrant and beautiful! I especially love hearing how you are processing so many images- I’m often overwhelmed by the sheer number of shots I take… Thanks for sharing!

I love the sunset photo of your daughter sitting on the rock, beautiful! And the photo of you is great, we are so often not in the photos that I’m sure your girls will treasure any photos they have with you!

Wow gorgeous pictures. I can’t believe your girls were in the water last week. We were also up north (in almost the same place) and I was way too scared to get in. LoL Amanda

Jodi, I love not only your colorful photos, but the cool way you have segmented your trip with the story boards. I need to try that! Thanks for letting us in on the lenses you used. Would you mind sharing what kind of camera you have? By the way, I purchased the Auto Loader because of your previous post and I love it. It really does speed things up. Now I just need to take the class you offer on the big batch actions. I can’t believe you processed so many vacation photos in such a short time. Your blog teaches me more than any other that I visit!

Janie – thanks for the compliments. I have the Canon 5D MKII. I also have the 40D, and occasionally use that. These were shot with the 5D MKII though.

Being a Michigander myself-there isn’t anything more beautiful than ‘up-North’. I love your colors and the stories you tell with pictures. The sun flare pics are sooo coool!!!!! Thanks for all your info on lenses, etc…..being a mom who just wants to take better pictures of my twins, and family/friends……I can’t thank you enough for all I have learned here. Seriously. A huge Thank-you! Just think of the fabulous memories you are creating for your children. (oh, my twins are Elle and Eden—–no, her nick name isn’t Ellie, its Ella Bella Della, or that is what her sister calls her. LOL)

quick question–how did you compose those storyboards with the text and boxes and everything? do you have a tutorial on it?thanks!

    • MCP Actions on September 7, 2009 at 8:14 am

I used the mcp magic blog it boards. They build in seconds add pictures and you can adds text bars too. Each take just a minute or two. They are on my website.

great shots, you really have a good eye for compostion. i have photoshop elements and find it frustrating because i am trying to learn but don’t get how to make all the tools work. what do you mean by “color burst” from complete workflow?

  16. MCP Actions on September 7, 2009 at 8:18 am

Darlene- color burst is an action from the set complete workflow. It is not compatible with elements. Sorry.

These are so pretty! I especially love the “love is” set. And it is nice to put a face with the blog I stalk every day! And I agree, you are beautiful – no retouching needed!!! Thanks for all you share with us.

What a fun trip!! Loved seeing your girls in Shutterbug this issue too!!

  19. MCP Actions on September 7, 2009 at 1:09 pm

Alisha – I have not seen it yet – a few emailed me and said they saw it there this weekend. I will be announcing it on the blog mid-week. 1st I want to see it – 🙂

What a great bunch of collages. I just returned from a vacation with 600+ pics too, no time to start!I need autoloader!

  21. Christy Combs - wayoutnumbered on September 7, 2009 at 7:57 pm

What fabulous inspiration to see these storyboards…grouping small shots together tell such a great story. It’s necessary too when you can’t email 600 pics to the grandparents! The photos actually seem to tell MORE of the story than when just viewed alone.

  22. Penny on September 7, 2009 at 8:16 pm

    All are just gorgeous, Jodi.

Beautiful! I am originally from “Up North”! I live in Southern Indiana now, but grew up in Northern MI in Ironwood. We grew up next to Lake Superior. Your photo’s have captured a place in my heart that aches for my home now. Love you work! Thank you so much for sharing~

I love your photos, they are fun and you have a definite subject or purpose showing in each one. As a newbie, I would have loved to have known which lenses you used for each shot. My daughter and I both just acquired the 50mm prime lens and still learning to use it. We both have photoshop and and I was not even aware of the Autoloader so I can wait to look into this. Do you use a different software to display your photos? I like how they are categorized. Thank you for sharing and for this informative site!!Susane
