The first half of 2014 is now over. Many interesting things have happened during the past month, so this is why we are reviewing the most exciting camera news and rumors that surfaced during June 2014.

Not very many cameras and lenses were revealed in June 2014, as everybody was preparing for the summer vacation. However, Nikon, Canon, Fujifilm, and Tamron have decided to make some announcements, so we should take a look at what has been unveiled during the past four weeks or so.

Nikon D810 has become official with a new 36.3-megapixel full frame CMOS sensor without an anti-aliasing filter for maximum image sharpness.

Nikon has stolen the show with the introduction of the D810. This is a new DSLR camera that will serve as a successor for both the D800 and D800E.

It comes packed with numerous improvements, however, it is not considered a “revolutionary” camera. It represents an evolution of the D800/D800E series as almost all aspects of the new DSLR have been revised by the Japanese corporation.

Additionally, Nikon has discontinued the D300s after roughly five years of market availability. The camera is still available for purchase, but its discontinuation is paving the way for a replacement, which could be announced at the Photokina 2014.

New lenses unveiled by Canon and Fuji, while new cameras are coming soon

The Canon and Fujifilm lenses unveiled in June 2014: EF-M 55-200mm f/4.5-6.3 and XF 18-135mm f/3.5-5.6.

Canon and Fujifilm both made a single announcement last month. Moreover, both launch events have had a lens under the spotlights, both aimed at their respective mirrorless camera line-ups.

The EF-M 55-200mm f/4.5-6.3 IS STM lens is the fourth Canon optic for EOS M cameras, while the XF 18-135mm f/3.5-5.6 R LM OIS WR lens is the first weathersealed optic for Fujifilm X-mount cameras.

No new Canon or Fuji shooters were officialized in June 2014, but the 7D Mark II and the X100T cameras are rumored to be announced sometime in the following months.

It is also worth mentioning the fact that Canon has patented a new image sensor with five pixel sheets: three for each color of the RGB space, one of ultraviolet light, and one for infrared light, respectively.

Panasonic FZ1000 bridge camera becomes official ahead of the Lumix LX8 compact shooter

Panasonic FZ1000 is a bridge camera with a 20.1-megapixel 1-inch-type sensor and 24-400mm f/2.8-4 lens.

Panasonic has taken the wraps off of an exciting bridge camera. The FZ1000 is now official with a very interesting specs list that includes a 20.1-megapixel 1-inch-type sensor, 25-400mm lens, and 4K video recording.

The Panasonic FZ1000 bridge camera will be released by the end of July at an affordable price sitting around $900.

In addition, the company is preparing to announce another shooter. The Lumix LX8 will replace the Lumix LX7 on July 16, in order to compete against the Sony RX100 III, while a compact camera with a Micro Four Thirds sensor is in development.

Three new Tamron lenses were introduced last month

The three Tamron lenses unveiled in June 2014: 28-300mm f/3.5-6.3 Di VC PZD, 14-150 f/3.5-5.8 Di III, and 18-200mm f/3.5-6.3 Di III VC.

Tamron also made a string of announcements in June. The Japanese manufacturer has revealed the 28-300mm f/3.5-6.3 Di VC PZD lens for Canon and Nikon full frame cameras.

The second Tamron lens unveiled during the past month is the 14-150mm f/3.5-5.8 Di III aimed at Micro Four Thirds cameras.

Last but not least, the Tamron 18-200mm f/3.5-6.3 Di III VC has become the first third-party lens for Canon EOS M cameras.

Camera and lens shipments are decreasing, but Sony wants to do something about it

Sony has presented its curved full frame sensor at the 2014 VLSI Technology Symposium. The sensor is 2 times more sensitive at the corners than planar sensors and it could have enormous implications in the world of digital photography.

In June 2014, it was revealed that the first quarter of the year had been another bad period for camera and lens manufacturers. Shipments are decreasing and they are taking the profits with them.

According to CIPA, camera shipments have dropped by 35% in Q1 2014 and the trend is expected to continue by the end of the year.

Sony is willing to turn things around as the company has revealed yet another revolutionary technology. It consists of a curved image sensor that is more sensitive to light than conventional flat sensors and which could have enormous implications in the digital imaging sector.
