Canon is rumored to announce a replacement to the flagship EOS 1D X DSLR camera in early 2016, albeit the company may speed things up if the Nikon D5 becomes official sooner than predicted.

In recent times, the first Nikon D5 rumors have showed up on the web. Its rival, the successor to the Canon 1D X, has been mentioned within the rumor mill several times, several sources claiming that the camera will be announced by the end of 2014. However, the flagship EOS DSLR has not showed up and it seems like it will not be unveiled this year, either, unless the D5 gets released sooner.

Canon is rumored to announce the 1D X Mark II, which will replace the 1D X, in early 2016.

Canon 1D X Mark II coming in early 2016 with new sensor and DIGIC 7 processor

Canon has said multiple times that it will not replace existing cameras unless it has to do it. The company’s executives are usually citing competition and new technologies in the claims that there is no need to launch new shooters.

It appears that this is the case with the Canon 1D X Mark II, which will not become available as early as some people have hoped. New rumors are stating that the DSLR will not become official sooner than early 2016.

The unnamed source has added that the camera will feature a brand new image sensor and it will be powered by a DIGIC 7 image processor, which is not available in any EOS shooter for the time being.

Announcement of development could occur by the end of 2015

The rumor mill says that the development of the Canon 1D X Mark II could be announced by the end of 2015. However, it depends on what Nikon does with the D5. This F-mount DSLR is rumored to be announced during the second half of 2015, albeit its release date is probably scheduled for 2016, too.

In 2016, a new edition of the summer Olympics will take place, which means that Canon must launch a new flagship camera, as the company has missed the 2014 World Cup window.

Either way, you should take this with a pinch of salt, especially considering the fact that a new EOS flagship might be released sooner depending on the Nikon D5 launch date.

Current flagship EOS camera has received a price drop

The Canon EOS 1D X DSLR was released as the company’s flagship camera in October 2011. The device features an 18.1-megapixel full frame sensor with a maximum ISO sensitivity of 204,800.

The camera features a 61-point autofocus system, 100,000-pixel RGB sensor, dual card slot, dual DIGIC 5+ image processor, and a continuous shooting mode of up to 14fps in JPEG mode and with the mirror locked up.

Its price has recently received a permanent $800 price drop, so the 1D X is available at Amazon, Adorama, and B&H PhotoVideo for a little under $6,000.
