Canon has patented a new lens that offers a fixed focal length of 400mm, a maximum aperture of f/2.8, and a built-in extender that increases the focal length by 1.4x.

As we are approaching the Photokina 2014, there are fears that companies will not make very many announcements over the following months.

Digital camera and lens manufacturers may wait for the event to show off their latest creations. Whether this turns out to be true or not, the companies will surely keep on patenting their products.

Canon has been pretty active in this department in recent times. The last time we spoke about a Canon lens patent, it involved a 400mm f/4 IS DO model. Now, we are also looking at a 400mm lens, but one that features a brighter aperture of f/2.8.

Canon 400mm f/2.8 lens patented in Japan with integrated 1.4x extender

This is the Canon EF 200-400mm f/4L IS USM lens with a built-in 1.4x extender. The company has patented a new lens with an integrated 1.4x extender, although the new version sports a focal length of 400mm and an aperture of f/2.8.

The Canon 400mm f/2.8 lens patent comes with an interesting surprise. This lens features a built-in extender of 1.4x, similar to the one found in the EF 200-400mm f/4L IS USM lens, which was introduced in May 2013.

The EF 200-400mm f/4L IS USM is said to be the first optic to come packed with an integrated 1.4x extender. When in use, it will provide a focal length of 280-560mm at the cost of one f-stop, meaning that the maximum aperture will stand at f/5.6.

If Canon employs a similar system, then the 400mm f/2.8 lens will offer a focal length of 560mm and a maximum aperture of f/4. EOS camera owners will probably be very happy to hear this, but simply patenting a product does not guarantee that it will be released on the market.

Amazon is currently selling the Canon EF 200-400mm f/4L IS USM lens with built-in 1.4x extender for a price around $11,800.

Canon keeps on patenting lenses with a focal length of 400mm

As stated above, Canon has patented another 400mm lens in recent times. That version comes packed with a maximum aperture of f/4 and image stabilization technology.

Furthermore, the 400mm f/4 version includes diffractive optics elements, which means that image quality will be improved, while its weight and size will be reduced.

Canon’s “year of the lenses” includes only three optics so far: the EF 16-35mm f/4L IS USM, the EF-S 10-18mm f/4.5-5.6 IS STM, and the EF-M 55-200mm f/4.5-6.3 IS STM.

Nevertheless, more models are expected to be revealed at the Photokina 2014, so stay tuned to our website!
