A new rumor has just showed up on the web and it presents a theory stating that Canon will not launch a 5D Mark IV or 5D X DSLR, instead choosing to release a 6D Mark II with superior specs compared to its predecessor.

Digital industry watchers are waiting for Canon to reveal a successor to the EOS 5D Mark III this April. A lot of insiders have said that a 5D-series is coming soon and that it will feature 4K video recording.

A different source is having some intriguing claims, that may be dubbed as impossible. Without much further ado, the latest rumor about Canon’s next DSLR is that it will be the 6D Mark II, which will serve as a replacement for both 6D and 5D Mark III.

The Canon 6D Mark II DSLR might replace the 5D Mark III, source says

The new idea regarding the Canon 6D Mark II DSLR is that it will come packed with better and more specs than its predecessor in order to be placed higher on the market. We have heard about this thing in the past, but nobody thought that the improvements will be enough to make it worthy of replacing the 5D Mark III.

Canon is set to replace both 6D and 5D Mark III with the 6D Mark II, an insider claims.

Although it is said that the shooter will gain a lot of features compared to its forerunner, it will not reach 5D Mark III levels. This means that it makes little sense to launch it as a downgrade, as the source claims, without facing the wrath of the photographers.

The source also talks about Dual Pixel AF technology, stating that it might not find its way into the 6D Mark II because it is not cost-effective. Nevertheless, the company’s engineers might be able to find a way, but the results are “not guaranteed”.

There is no mention of 4K video recording, which is a capability that has been confirmed by all other sources and there is no way Canon is launching a replacement for a video-focused DSLR without extensive videography abilities.

A Canon 6D Mark II DSLR as a 5D Mark III replacement does not sound feasible at all. However, companies have made stranger decisions in the past, so it is best not to be surprised if this becomes true.

As for earlier rumors, we remind you that the 5D Mark IV or 5D X is coming in April 2016, around the NAB Show, but after the release date of the 1D X Mark II flagship DSLR.
