Canon EF 24-105mm f/3.5-5.6 IS STM lens becomes official with screw-type stepping motor
Canon is introducing the EF 24-105mm f/3.5-5.6 IS STM at Photokina 2014 as the company’s first standard zoom lens aimed at full frame cameras with a stepping motor.
The screw-type STM drive will offer quiet focusing during video recording, as a testimony to the manufacturer’s continued dedication to videographers.
This inner focusing system is also very accurate and very fast, in order to meet the demands of photographers using full frame cameras.
Built-in stabilization technology offers four f-stops of correction
The Canon EF 24-105mm f/3.5-5.6 IS STM lens will be marketed as a versatile product. The manufacturer says that it will offer wide-angle focal lengths for landscape photography, while providing telephoto focal lengths when shooting portraits or when the subject is far away from the users.
Its optical construction consists of 17 elements split into 13 groups. The internal design has been carefully thought to work in combination with special coatings, in order to make sure that chromatic aberration, flare, and ghosting will not trouble the photographers.
Furthermore, the lens comes with a circular aperture made out of seven blades, which will deliver visually pleasing bokeh effects, and built-in optical image stabilization system with 4 f-stops of correction.
Lightweight and compact zoom coming towards the end of the year
Canon has confirmed that the EF 24-105mm f/3.5-5.6 IS STM is the cheaper alternative to the EF 24-105mm f/4L IS USM. Additionally, the newer version is lighter as it weighs 525 grams / 18.52 ounces, down from the 670 grams / 23.6 ounces of the more expensive solution.
The new model measures 83.4mm / 33-inches in diameter and 104mm / 41-inches in length, respectively. Its filter thread is sized at 77mm, meaning that it has the same filter size as the EF 24-105mm f/4L IS USM.
The optic is scheduled to become available for a price of $599.99 this December. Amazon has already begun accepting pre-orders for the EF 24-105mm f/3.5-5.6 IS STM lens at the aforementioned price.
