Canon has officially unveiled the EF-mount 35mm f/1.4L II USM wide-angle prime lens that has become world’s first lens with BR Optics technology.

One of the most rumored lenses of recent times, the Canon EF 35mm f/1.4L II USM wide-angle prime, has finally been introduced by the Japan-based company.

This optic replaces an existing model with a new internal configuration as well as a novel external design. The new version is about 30% heavier than the existing one and it has become the first lens in the world to employ a Blue Spectrum Refractive Optics element that will go around by the name of BR Optics.

A new 35mm f/1.4 lens has been expected for quite some time by EOS users. The new unit comes packed with 14 elements divided into 11 groups and with a 9-blade rounded aperture.

The internal configuration includes two aspherical elements, one Fluorine element, and one Super Ultra-low Dispersion (UD) element along with the newly-developed Blue Spectrum Refractive Optics element.

This is how the Canon BR Optics technology works.

The latter consists of an organic element that will be called BR Optics technology. It is designed to refract blue light in order to reduce chromatic aberration. The company says that the BR Optics system takes care of blue light a lot better than any other existing technology on the market.

Inside the Canon EF 35mm f/1.4L II USM lens, an Ultrasonic autofocus motor is available along with an internal focusing mechanism. This means that the optic supports autofocus and that it focuses without the front element rotating.

Its minimum focusing distance is set at 28 centimeters, while the maximum magnification is set at 0.21x. A manual focus ring is available on the lens along with a distance scale.

Canon EF 35mm f/1.4L II USM lens is weathersealed and is scheduled for an October 2015 release.

A fluorine coating has been added to both front and rear elements in order to make the optic easier to clean from dust, dirt, and liquids should they adhere to these surfaces.

The new Canon EF 35mm f/1.4L II USM lens is about 180 grams heavier than its predecessor as it weighs 760 grams. Its diameter measures about 80 millimeters, while its filter thread is sized at 72mm. The total length of the lens is 106mm.

Canon will release the EF 35mm f/1.4L II USM wide-angle prime for a price of $1,799 this October. The lens is available for pre-order at Amazon.
