Less than 24 hours have passed since the rumor mill has broken down the “news” that Canon is working on a new EF-M lens that will be announced soon.

In this case, “soon” has actually been very soon as the Canon EF-M 55-200mm f/4.5-6.3 IS STM lens is now official and it has become the first telephoto zoom lens for Canon EOS M mirrorless cameras.

The EF-M 55-200mm f/4.5-6.3 IS STM is the fourth Canon EF-M lens, following into the footsteps of the 22mm f/2, 11-22mm f/4-5.6, and 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 optics.

It is the first to cover long telephoto angles and will provide a 35mm focal length equivalent of 88mm to 320mm. The company says that it is perfect for taking portrait photos at the widest angle of 55mm as well as wildlife photos at 200mm.

As a result, the EOS M series is now more versatile than ever as it covers focal lengths from 11mm to 200mm.

Canon has added both optical image stabilization (IS) and Stepping Motor (STM) technologies into the EF-M 55-200mm f/4.5-6.3 IS STM lens.

The former reduces camera shakes and offers up to 3.5-stop of stabilization during stills and video recording, in order to reduce blur. The latter provides smooth and silent autofocus which is perfect for capturing videos.

The new optic sports an Ultra-Low Dispersion element that boosts image quality alongside an aspherical element.

The Canon EF-M 55-200mm f/4.5-6.3 IS STM lens is a compact and lightweight lens that will fit the design of the EOS M cameras.

It measures 86.5mm in length and 60.9mm in diameter while offering a 52mm filter thread. The total weight of the lens stands at about 260 grams.
