Canon’s “year of the lenses” has officially started with the launch of the EF-S 10-18mm f/4.5-5.6 IS STM lens aimed at EOS DSLR cameras with APS-C image sensors.

One of the highest-rated Canon lenses at Amazon is the EF-S 10-22mm f/3.5-4.5 USM. After days of rumor and speculation, the time has come for this lens to be replaced by a newer model, which is lighter and more compact.

The replacement consists of the Canon EF-S 10-18mm f/4.5-5.6 IS STM lens, which marks the beginning of the company’s “year of the lenses”.

Canon EF-S 10-18mm f/4.5-5.6 IS STM wide-angle zoom lens has been announced as a cheaper, lighter, and smaller replacement for the EF-S 10-22mm f/3.5-4.5 USM lens.

Canon has recently announced the production of its 100 millionth EF lens. The legacy of this centennial milestone is carried on by the Canon EF-S 10-18mm f/4.5-5.6 IS STM lens that substitutes the EF-S 10-22mm f/3.5-4.5 USM, as stated above.

It has been specially crafted for the company’s EOS cameras which feature an APS-C image sensor. The wide-angle zoom lens offers a lightweight and compact construction, which is a major advantage over the previous generation.

Furthermore, it offers built-in optical image stabilization technology, a system that will allow users to compensate for camera shakes of up to four steps of light, Canon says.

The stepping motor is joined by a new focus system that is said to be ideal for Canon DSLRs which feature EOS Movie Servo AF technology. Among the list of cameras packing such feature we can find the 70D, Rebel SL1 / 100D, and Rebel T5i / 700D.

Smaller, lighter, cheaper than its predecessor, but with a shorter focal length and slower aperture

Despite being 38% lighter and 20% smaller than its predecessor, the new Canon EF-S 10-18mm f/4.5-5.6 IS STM lens offers a focal length shorter by 4mm along with a slower aperture.

Nevertheless, the Japanese maker is confident that the IS system will compensate for the slower aperture, although there is nothing you can do about the shorter focal length. As for the 35mm equivalent, this new product will offer a focal range of 16-29mm.

Canon’s new optic weighs 0.53 lbs / 240 grams and measures 2.94-inches / 75mm in diameter as well as 2.83-inches / 72mm in length. Its filter thread is sized at 67mm and it is worth noting that weathersealing is not available on this lens.

Another advantage of the EF-S 10-18mm f/4.5-5.6 IS STM lens is its price, which will stand at $299.99 when it becomes available this June. Its predecessor, the EF-S 10-22mm version is currently available for about $600 at Amazon.
