Canon has patented an EF-S-mount 15-105mm f/2.8-5.6 STM zoom lens for DSLR cameras with APS-C-sized image sensors.

Several lenses have been patented by Canon in recent times. Some of them have been developed for EOS DSLRs with APS-C sensors, such as the EF-S 20mm f/2.8 STM, which has a strong chance of becoming official.

As usual, there is room for more and the Japan-based company is not wasting any time. The Canon EF-S 15-105mm f/2.8-5.6 STM lens has been patented in its home country as a lens that offers close to 10x optical zoom and which could become a travel companion for photographers on their vacation.

Canon patents EF-S 15-105mm f/2.8-5.6 STM lens for APS-C DSLRs

Patent applications, which have been leaked on the web, have revealed a number of products that are being worked on by Canon. The list includes hints at a drone with a built-in camera as well as at a full-frame mirrorless camera.

The latest product to be patented by world’s biggest lens and camera vendor consists of the Canon EF-S 15-105mm f/2.8-5.6 STM lens. This optic would cover wide to telephoto focal lengths, thus becoming an interesting lens for traveling, as users will no longer have to swap lenses on a constant basis.

It has been designed for EOS-series DSLR cameras with APS-C-sized image sensors. This means that it will offer a 35mm focal length equivalent of approximately 24-168mm.

The closest thing to this product, currently available for EF-S-mount users, is the 15-85mm f/3.5-5.6 IS USM, which was introduced in 2009 and which is available at Amazon for about $800.

It is unlikely that the Canon EF-S 15-105mm f/2.8-5.6 STM lens will serve as a replacement to the EF-S 15-85mm f/3.5-5.6 IS USM, as it does not have built-in image stabilization technology, nor a higher-end Ultrasonic Motor.

Canon EF-S 15-105mm f/2.8-5.6 STM lens patent details

Canon filed for this patent on December 17, 2013, while the approval from the Japanese authority was granted on June 25, 2015.

The technical details have not been revealed, but it looks like this zoom lens has an internal configuration consisting of about seven groups and 11 elements.

An inner focusing mechanism is in place making sure that the front lens element does not move when focusing.
