Canon EOS 5D Mark IV specs to include 24.2MP sensor

A lot of details about Canon’s replacement for the 5D Mark III have started to show up in recent times and now they are joined by the DSLR’s specifications.

During the past couple of years or so, the rumor mill has provided some information about the follow-up to the 5D Mark III. However, most of those details proved to be inaccurate. The DSLR will be announced this year and reliable info has just begun showing up.

Trusted sources have leaked several Canon EOS 5D Mark IV specs and it looks like the new model will have a bunch of improvements compared to the previous generation, albeit there are still no words about the camera’s alleged 4K video recording capabilities.

Without much further ado, the upcoming 5D Mark III successor will feature a 24.2-megapixel full-frame sensor with a 61-point autofocus system. The insider says that 41 of the 61 points will be cross-type, which is reminiscent of the AF technology available in the current generation.

Canon will add a 24.2-megapixel sensor into the 5D Mark III replacement along with WiFi and GPS.

Canon will add one DIGIC 7+ image processor in the DSLR, allowing it to capture up to 7fps in continuous mode. The ISO sensitivity will range between 100 and 51200, but the device will get “expandable” settings.

The display on the back will be a 3.2-inch touchscreen, while the dual SD card slots will support both CFast and SD cards. WiFi and GPS will be built-in, just like we predicted recently.

The external battery grip will be the BG-E20 version, that we had already heard about through the grapevine. However, the battery will not remain the same: there will be a new LP-E20 battery. For now, the source has not made any mentions regarding the battery life.

5D Mark IV improvements compared to 5D Mark III

Judging by the leaked Canon EOS 5D Mark IV specs, the DSLR will get moderate increase in megapixels, as the 5D Mark III employs a 22.3MP sensor. Additionally, the burst mode will increase from 6fps to 7fps, while maximum native ISO will reach 51200, up from 25600.

The current generation is powered by a DIGIC 5+ engine, while the new one consists of a DIGIC 7+ processor, as stated above. WiFi, GPS, and touchscreen are all nice additions, but photographers will be expecting a lot more from the shooter when it becomes official.

Speaking of which, the 5D Mark IV will be announced in late August or early September. It will be priced similarly to the 5D Mark III at launch and will be a bit lighter than its predecessor.
