Canon is once again rumored to announce the PowerShot SX60 HS IS by the end of May 2014 as a bridge camera with a zoom lens bigger than 60x.

You could say that Canon’s story of the SX-series bridge cameras with extended zoom lenses begins with the PowerShot SX10 IS. This device was announced in October 2008 and Canon has been adding a new model to the SX series yearly since SX10’s launch.

The last camera of the series is the PowerShot SX50 HS which has been revealed in September 2012, but has not been replaced in the fall of 2013. Although a lot of people have been expecting the Japan-based company to release a new model around September 2013, the Canon PowerShot SX60 HS has failed to appear and has been eluding our sight for months.

Earlier in 2014, the rumor mill has begun talking about the PowerShot SX50 HS replacement. Now, an anonymous source is once again saying that the Canon PowerShot SX60 HS IS bridge camera will be finally revealed before the summer.

Canon PowerShot SX50 HS IS is rumored to be replaced by the SX60 HS IS in the near future.

Towards the beginning of 2014, an inside source has begun claiming that Canon will replace the PowerShot SX50 HS with a newer model that will feature a 100x optical zoom lens.

A couple of months have passed and another source has begged to differ. The bridge camera will become official soon, but it will feature a 60x optical zoom lens with a 35mm equivalent of 20-1200mm.

Additionally, a 15-megapixel 1/2.3-inch-type CMOS image sensor would capture the shots. Nevertheless, these details have been contradicted relatively soon by a third source who has said that the SX60 HS will indeed sport a 100x optical zoom lens with a 35mm equivalent of 20-2000mm.

Well, another leakster is here and is asserting that the so-called Canon PowerShot SX60 HS IS will be the company’s next announcement and will take place soon.

Canon’s long-zoom bridge camera may feature 100x lens

Unfortunately, there are no leaked specs, announcement date, release date, or price details available. Still, people familiar with the matter believe that the bridge camera will be powered by a 100x optical zoom lens, which has been spotted in a patent sometime in the past.

Evidence of a 100x lens exists, so it is “more plausible” than the 60x lens. Nevertheless, we should not rule out any possibility.

As for the reason why Canon has “delayed” the PowerShot SX60 HS IS launch, there is no real evidence to point to the fact that the recent issue with a chemical used in the rubber part of the PowerShot SX50 HS’ electronic viewfinder may be the one to blame.

Canon has recalled roughly 14,000 SX50 units manufactured between September 1 and November 15, 2013 as the rubberized EVF has caused skin and eye irritation to some users. Either way, a new camera is in the works and it is coming soon, so stay tuned!

In the meantime, the Canon PowerShot SX50 HS is available at Amazon for a price around $400.
