Canon is allegedly working on an L-designated wide-angle zoom lens with a constant maximum aperture of f/2 designed for EOS full-frame DSLR cameras.

It has been a while since the rumor mill claimed that Canon was developing a wide-angle zoom lens with a constant maximum aperture of f/2.8 and with L-designation. Back in May 2014, a trusted source leaked this information, while a different source made a similar claim in May 2015.

In the meantime, Sigma has introduced the 24-35mm f/2 DG HSM Art lens. Compared to Canon’s optic, the Sigma lens is already official and has a brighter aperture, so this brings some problems to the EOS maker’s yard.

However, a new source is now claiming that Sigma has moved a tad faster, as Canon is also working on a wide-angle zoom f/2 lens for full-frame DSLRs.

Sigma has revealed the world’s first wide-angle zoom lens with a maximum aperture of f/2 for full-frame DSLRs. Canon is reportedly working on a similar product that is on its way to the market.

Canon wide-angle zoom L f/2 lens rumored to be in the works

When Sigma unveiled the 24-35mm f/2 DG HSM Art lens for full-frame cameras, photographers commended the company for its actions. Most experts are expecting this optic to sell really well when it becomes available.

It seems like Canon might have been capable of stealing the show, as the rumor mill says that the Japan-based company is close to revealing a wide-angle zoom L lens with an aperture faster than f/2.8.

The exact date of the product launch event has not been provided, but it seems like Sigma has not beaten the EOS manufacturer by much. This information is suggesting that the EF-mount optic is very close, so we should not rule out an announcement by the end of the summer.

This product appears to consist of a Canon wide-angle zoom L f/2 lens that could be very expensive. It would not be a surprise if it were to cost around $3,000, just like the critically-acclaimed EF 11-24mm f/4L USM lens at Amazon.

Other lenses could be introduced by Canon by the end of 2015

Meanwhile, trusted sources are reporting that the next L-designated prime lens will be the EF 35mm f/1.4L II USM, which is bound to become official this fall.

Other optics that may be introduced soon are the EF 24-70mm f/2.8L IS and the EF-M 85mm f/2.8 IS STM, the latter being aimed at EOS M mirrorless cameras.

Further information could be leaked on the web, so stay tuned to find it out!
