DJI Innovations has finally announced the sought-after Phantom 2 Vision quadcopter with a built-in camera, after previewing it earlier this year.
Quadcopters are beginning to exit elitist niche markets and are heading towards becoming consumer products. DJI Innovations has attracted a lot of attention with its amazing Phantom copter, which allows photographers to attach GoPro Hero cameras to it and to record amazing aerial footage.
Earlier in 2013, the company’s CEO, Colin Guinn, has revealed the DJI Phantom Vision, a quadcopter with a built-in camera. The product already had a camera attached to it, meaning that you would not have to buy a GoPro Hero.
It was supposed to be released during summer, but unforeseen issues caused the device to be delayed. Several weeks ago, the company has revealed that both the Vision and the Phantom 2 would be launched by the end of 2013. Well, DJI Innovations is now fulfilling its promise and has officially announced “your flying camera”, the DJI Phantom 2 Vision, in its final form.
DJI Innovations announces its first quadcopter with built-in camera: Phantom 2 Vision
DJI Phantom 2 Vision is a flying quadcopter with an integrated camera. It allows users to view images on their mobile phones in real-time, while controlling the device. Beside recording full HD movies, the Vision can also take photos at the same time.
This can all be done with the help of the DJI Vision application, which can be downloaded for iOS and Android devices at the iTunes Store and Google Play Store, respectively.
Files can be transferred wirelessly to your smartphone and you can share the glorious aerial photos and videos to social networking websites, such as Facebook and YouTube.
DJI Innovations claims that the Phantom 2 Vision offers the first FPV system integrated with a smartphone.
Final DJI Phantom 2 Vision specs list offers built-in WiFi, 14MP sensor, and 300-meter range
The DJI Phantom 2 Vision specs include a 14-megapixel 1/2.3-inch-type image sensor capable of recording 1920 x 1080 videos at 30p or 60i. Its lens will provide a field-of-view of 140 degrees and features an f/2.8 aperture.
Built-in WiFi will secure the connection to your mobile phone. The maximum distance will stand at 300 meters, so you should not stray very far away from the quadcopter.
Being connected to a smartphone has all kinds of benefits. There are some flight controls integrated into the DJI Vision application, such as tilt. This could lead to more creative videos, especially when flight and telemetry parameters are displayed within the app.
Furthermore, the shooting settings can be seen and set in the software. Photographers and videographers alike can set the image and video quality, ISO sensitivity, White Balance, exposure compensations, and whether to shoot JPG or RAW photos.
Longer battery life of up to 25 minutes and auto-pilot for the Vision quadcopter
Other DJI Phantom 2 Vision parameters showed within the app are the WiFi signal strength, SD card space, GPS information, and battery capacity. Speaking of which, the quadcopter will be able to fly for a maximum of 25 minutes, which should be enough to record stunning aerial movies.
The GPS functionality goes beyond basic features. There is an auto-pilot built in the system, allowing users to lock the altitude of the Vision. The device will hover steadily over a point to give photographers enough time to capture their images.
Additionally, the Vision’s exact position is shown, so that the pilot will know how far the quadcopter has gone. A cool feature is called “Return to Home”, that triggers automatically once the 300-meter range is exceeded and makes the device return to the take-off site.
