Apple released an update for the Digital Camera RAW Compatibility tool, in order to add support for nine new cameras.

The Digital Camera RAW Compatibility Update 4.04 is now available for all Mac OS X users and brings with it support for nine new cameras in Aperture 3 and iPhoto ’11.

Apple’s latest update is more than welcomed as it includes RAW image compatibility for new Leica, Nikon, Pentax, and Sony cameras. It will allow users to edit their RAW files on Mac OS X computers, giving them an extra incentive to buy some new cameras for their career in photography.

Digital Camera RAW Compatibility Update 4.04 adds support for nine new cameras.

Nine new cameras supported by Apple’s Aperture 3 and iPhoto ’11

The list of newly-supported cameras include:

  • Leica D-Lux 6: a camera introduced in September 2012 which features a zoom range between 24 and 90mm for the 35mm equivalent;
  • Leica V-Lux 4: was announced last year in September, as a compact camera with 25 to 600mm focal length for 35mm equivalent;
  • Leica X2: introduced in May 2012 with a new electronic viewfinder and as the successor of the APS-C X1;
  • Nikon D5200: a mid-range DSLR announced last year in November and re-announced for the North American market earlier this year at CES 2013;
  • Pentax K-5 II: a 16.3-megapixel camera introduced in September 2012 with a new autofocus system;
  • Pentax K-5 IIs: a similar DSLR camera like its aforementioned brother, but which does not have an anti-aliasing filter in order to improve image quality at the cost of more visible moiré patterns;
  • Pentax K-30: an entry-level DSLR, although it features the same 16.3-megapixel sensor as the K-5 II;
  • Pentax Q: a series of mirrorless cameras first announced in 2011. The latest camera is the Q10, introduced in September 2012;
  • Sony Cyber-shot DSC-RX1: this is world’s smallest full-frame digital camera with a 24.3-megapixel CMOS sensor, revealed last September.

These are the nine cameras which gain Aperture 3 and iPhoto ’11 compatibility after installing the Digital Camera RAW Compatibility Update 4.04 on a Mac OS X computer. The file is sized at 5.13 MB and it is available for download now at the official Apple website.

It is fairly easy to update the software, so users should not have any trouble in performing this operation. As a result, if you own a Mac and looking to buy either one of the aforementioned cameras, you can go ahead and do it because your RAW files will be supported by both Aperture and iPhoto.
