Photographer Adriano Alarcon has shaved off half of his majestic beard in order to create the surreal “Fifty Fifty Selfie Barber Shop” self-portrait project.

Artists often use current trends in order to come up with new ideas for future projects. As the whole world continues to be fascinated by the hipster look, which includes glorious beards, photographer Adriano Alarcon has decided to create a self-portrait series that has his beard in the center of the attention. Actually, it is only half of his beard, as the other half has been shaved and replaced by various candy and toys. The series has been named “Fifty Fifty Selfie Barber Shop” and it has been created with real props and without Photoshop effects.

Photographer shaves half of his beard for creative “Fifty Fifty Selfie Barber Shop” series

Adriano spent four months growing an epic beard. After four months, the stage was set and the “Fifty Fifty Selfie Barber Shop” was ready to come to life. The photographer has shaved half of his facial hair and has begun attaching different objects to the shaved part.

The artist has captured a photo with the shaved half uncovered, just to show how it would look like that. However, the rest of the shots include popcorn, candy, toys, or bugs. The latter are not real, they are just props, but be prepared in case you have a phobia of these tiny creatures.

You can view it as a taunting towards hipsters or simply as a fun project used by the artist to laugh at himself. Either way, this is one of the most creative series in recent times and it shows that you do not need extensive digital manipulation to make your dreams come true.

Adriano Alarcon pokes fun at himself as well as at beards and selfies

The idea behind the “Fifty Fifty Selfie Barber Shop” is the realization that you have made a mistake that is close to impossible to fix. Despite this fact, the artist wants to show that you can always try to makes amends to your mistakes. In his case, Adriano Alarcon has used whatever he could find at this disposal to rebuild his beard.

As stated above, the project takes a jab at two of the most popular trends these days: beards and selfies. This generation seems to be obsessed with hipster looks which need to be shared on social networking websites in the form of selfies.

One interesting fact about the series is that it was not made in one day. It took a weekend to create and, for some reason, it coincided with Brazil’s presidential elections. Without any insight, people have given the São Paulo-based artist some strange looks.

The project has an official website but this project has made it into the spotlight on 500px’ site.
