The Fujifilm X-Pro2, not the X-Pro1S, will replace the flagship X-mount X-Pro1 camera in 2015, sources familiar with the matter are reporting.

Unconfirmed reports have stated that Fujifilm is working on a successor for the X-Pro1, the top of the X-mount line-up. The alleged camera was said to feature an APS-C image sensor and to be introduced sometime in early 2014 as the Fujifilm X-Pro1S.

The first three months of the year have passed therefore we can safely say that we are no longer in “early 2014”. As you have probably noticed by now, a replacement for the X-Pro1 is not here, while the weathersealed X-T1 is showing signs that there is no need for another advanced X-series camera.

Either way, it appears that Fujifilm has abandoned its plans for the previously-rumored X-Pro1S in order to focus on the research and development of the X-Pro2, a device that will be released sometime in 2015.

The Fujifilm X-Pro1 camera will be replaced by the Fuji X-Pro2 sometime in 2015, source says.

The aforementioned information comes from a source who has been right in the past. Moreover, it reiterates something that has been said on a previous basis: the Fujifilm X-Pro2 release date is set for 2015.

Moreover, it kind of supports the idea that Fuji has begun working on the X-Pro2 only recently. Beside the X-Pro1S rumors, the later part of 2013 has revealed an interview given by Hiroshi Kawahara, Fuji’s product manager, who has claimed that the X-Pro2 is not in the works (at that time) and that it will not be released anytime soon.

It is too early to give an accurate prediction, but the official and unofficial information seem to match, so do not hold your breath over a 2014 launch.

Different source claims Fuji X-Pro1 replacement will be unveiled at Photokina 2014

On the other hand, it is worth reminding that another source who has been right regarding the Fujifilm X-T1 release date has some other thoughts. The same person is claiming that the X-Pro1 successor will become official at the Photokina 2014.

As you can see, there is an important discrepancy between the two timeframes. Nevertheless, we have already stated that it is still too soon to draw any conclusions therefore everybody will have to wait for more details.

In the meantime, the Fujifilm X-Pro1 price has dropped below $1,000 at Amazon, a small price to pay for the only X-mount mirrorless camera with a hybrid viewfinder.
