A Fujifilm representative has revealed in an interview that the company has developed an XF 35mm f/1.4 lens with an apodization (APD) filter, which may be released on the market sometime in the future.

One of the most interesting products to come out of the Photokina 2014 event is the Fujifilm XF 56mm f/1.2 R APD lens. This is one of the few lenses to feature an apodization filter and the single version to come with autofocus support.

It appears that the Japanese corporation has tested other optics with a built-in APD filter. According to Shigeru Kondo, an Engineering Manager and an inventor who holds other titles at Fujifilm, the company has developed an XF 35mm f/1.4 APD lens prototype, which could actually be released on the market.

The Fujifilm XF 56mm f/1.2 R APD lens could be joined by another X-mount optic with an apodization filter: a 35mm f/1.4 version.

Fuji engineers have built a 35mm lens with an apodization filter

The reason why publications are interviewing representatives of various companies is to find out inside details that otherwise would remain unknown forever.

Japan-based publication, called DC.Watch, has recently interviewed three Fujifilm representatives. Takashi Soga, Takashi Aoki, and Shigeru Kondo have all taken part in the interview, revealing some intel about the apodization filter found in the XF 56mm f/1.2 R APD lens among other details.

However, the most interesting piece of information is referring to a Fujifilm XF 35mm f/1.4 APD lens. It appears that the company’s engineers have built such version, but they have eventually decided to go with the model featuring a longer focal length.

Being a short telephoto lens as well as having a slightly faster aperture has provided the 56mm f/1.2 R APD with a shallower depth of field so this is why it was chosen over to the 35mm f/1.4 model.

Fujifilm XF 35mm f/1.4 APD lens could still make it onto the market

In the interview, Shigeru Kondo does not say whether the lens will ever be released or not, therefore we should not rule out either possibility.

The company’s engineer has confirmed that the apodization filter has made a difference in the aspect of the photos captured with the Fujifilm XF 35mm f/1.4 APD lens when compared to the regular version.

Taking this into account and adding to it the fact that the rumor mill has previously claimed that Fuji is working on a new 35mm lens, we may be seeing another apodization optic being launched in the future.

Whatever the future holds for us, stay tuned to Camyx to find out! Meanwhile, check out the Fujinon XF 56mm f/1.2 R APD lens at Amazon, where it is available for about $1,500.
