How to direct subjects when posing. Seriously need help on that.

  2. Stephanie on May 11, 2010 at 9:06 am

I am definitely lacking in the business side of things. I’m pretty sure I need help in the post processing too. I’ve been wanting to take advantage of a workshop but either can’t afford it or can’t make it work with my schedule.

  3. Eric on May 11, 2010 at 9:08 am

I think that training people how to get the red eye out of photos is lacking. Every photo I take of me, there is me with red eyes, no matter what I do, I’m always photographed with red eyes. My eyes aren’t really red, so I’m thinking this is the most lacking. I’m interested in getting the red eye out before the actual photo is taken. Do I need to put drops in my eyes, do I need a better camera, or do I need to have some feature on my camera that gets the red eye out? No matter how hard I try, there always seems to be a little red in my eye.

  4. Melissa McClain on May 11, 2010 at 9:09 am

The aspect of my photography training that is lacking is sports photography and learning the technique to get that perfect shot.

  5. Stacey Allison on May 11, 2010 at 9:09 am

I think I probably need to spend more time on the fundamentals of shooting and getting to know how the camera works and working with composition. Whew, I guess that’s all of it. I think I started backwards. I love to play around with photoshop and will do a lot of editing, but I’d like to be able to take better pictures in the first place.

  6. Briana on May 11, 2010 at 9:09 am

I desperately want to become a full time, professional photographer, but my business sense is sadly lacking. This series has wonderful timing. As for actual photography skills, I have yet to play with flash, though I’ll need to learn very soon.

  7. Jennifer on May 11, 2010 at 9:12 am

I am lacking the ability to attract NEW customers, especially seniors.

  8. Christina P. on May 11, 2010 at 9:13 am

Tough question! I think I’m lacking when it comes to developing a specific style. There’s so many things I want to try that I feel I’m all over the place. I need to figure out my look.

  9. JessicaN on May 11, 2010 at 9:13 am

I am lacking in creativity. I can get the basics down but I want to be more consistent with my processing and be more creative with my posing. I would love some tutorials on getting better with my processing workflow.

  10. Nance H on May 11, 2010 at 9:14 am

I need to learn more about ‘finding the light’ to achieve a correct exposure.

  11. Emily on May 11, 2010 at 9:14 am

I am lacking in the technical aspects of shooting. I think I get lucky a little too often!

  12. Nils on May 11, 2010 at 9:15 am

Definitely the business side of things from pricing to marketing etc… Also lighting!! All the different types of natural lighting situations we might encounter as photographers and how to harness it! Thanks for the contest 🙂

  13. Jeanine on May 11, 2010 at 9:15 am

I hope it’s not too vast of an area but I’m lacking creativity in my post processing and posing! I know the basics but need to expand and further develop my style while I open my business and make as few mistakes as possible. Maybe gaining more confidence in my business and photo skills will open me up towards more creativity. Thanks for the chance to win.

  14. Kelly on May 11, 2010 at 9:15 am

    Educate me please!

  15. Corrie Schaffeld on May 11, 2010 at 9:16 am

Pulling it all together! I can shoot and process… Great with marketing but tend to suffer with the business side of things and have no clue how do I Pull it all together so i can grow my business and take the next step

  16. Jenn on May 11, 2010 at 9:16 am

I so need help on the business/marketing side of things. Not that I couldn’t improve on post processing or other photography skills but I think MOST lacking is the business stuff. I was a teacher before being a photographer and I dealt with lesson plans, grades, remediating students, etc.- not tracking expenses, dealing with invoices, etc. Would love to win a book, a workshop, anything that would help me!

  17. Angie on May 11, 2010 at 9:17 am

I need help with lighting. I think I have a fairly good eye as far as composition… but my lighting when it comes to portraits is never great. I’d love to get into the workshop!! Thanks for the contest!

  18. Jenn on May 11, 2010 at 9:18 am

Just posted to my FB page! Yes, I really would love to win 🙂

  19. cynthia on May 11, 2010 at 9:19 am

The business aspect for sure! I feel as though I have more than the basics of photography down. I’ve taken classes and know what I am doing. I feel as though I could be a little more comfortable with light. The business side is definitely where I am struggling, online with knowing what I am doing on my website. SEO…what is that…how do I improve that? Totally lost. Everything I read is gibberish…and I definitely have to improve that NOW. The last thing I know I am weak at is posing…especially couples. I love to play with kids, that how I get my best pics of them, just playing. But adults. I can freeze. It’s weird, but sometimes I just don’t know what to do with them and I prefer not to have everything so posed anyway. How do I “coach” them along? Thanks and I am crossing my fingers for this giveaway! It would make my day…er week..month 🙂

  24. Sonya on May 11, 2010 at 9:23 am

I am in the very beginning stages of my photography career even though I have been dabbling in it for years. I lack formal training except for a few classes here and there and I am mostly self taught but as I get farther into it the more I realize I would love to take actual classes.

My weak spots is still the camera. I can rock it when I have the time to slow down and figure out what I’m doing (love apature) – but as a newly started professional – its the going from one location to the next and not thinking it fast enough to the next setting that I need help on.

  51. aimeej on May 11, 2010 at 9:42 am

I’m lacking in the skills I need to accomplish a clean look to my finished photos. I feel like I am close, but there seems to be something just out of my reach that I don’t yet know.

  52. Brook Hollis on May 11, 2010 at 9:43 am

I lack the marketing skills I feel is needed to be highly sucessful in such a competitive industry. Where do I direct my marketing cashflow?? What techniques really work to gain new clients and get the type of exposure I want?? No clue!!!

For all my knowing, I know there are many things I don’t know. I’ve been slowly trying to explore the world of photography for almost two years now, but really, I’ve been fascinated with photography my whole life. After I got my camera, I started taking thousands of pictures- of anything and everything, from every angle, in any light. I explored the world of post processing, enjoying everything I did. Now, I’m to the point where I need to learn how to make the leap from passionate hobbyist to real professional. I’m most lacking in business development skills- this is the part that makes me doubt myself. Yet I also know that I will always be on a journey of discovery with every aspect of my photography- and I look forward to that.

For me its the dealing with people aspect. I get flustered and nervous and all the posing, people skills I have go out the window.. I need to watch/shoot with seasoned photographers and get some confidence!

  60. cherisse on May 11, 2010 at 9:52 am

I am lacking on the technical part of the business. Also this workshop is perfect timing! I’ve been wanting to become a full time photographer & I need some major help!

  61. Enrico on May 11, 2010 at 9:54 am

I feel the need to improve substantially in my branding and marketing skills, I think it’s though to learn this stuff from books and online courses.

  62. Tessy on May 11, 2010 at 9:54 am

I feel that my education on knowing all the in’s and outs of my camera are lacking. I need to learn more about it so I feel comfortable getting great shots. I highly rely on my graphic design background to “edit” when I don’t get things quite right in the original.

  80. Suzanne on May 11, 2010 at 10:14 am

I feel like I mostly have the business side ready to go. However, I am struggling with how to attract the type of client I’m targeting. I think my shyness gets in the way. Ugh.

  81. Jen Prescott on May 11, 2010 at 10:15 am

  82. Laurie on May 11, 2010 at 10:19 am

I’m definitely in need of all that goes into the business side but I feel like I’m lacking that one thing that ties everything together. I think I need a weekend of shooting with a mentor that takes me through lighting, composition, post processing. Thanks for this Get Educated series!

  86. Jenn S. on May 11, 2010 at 10:22 am

The part that I feel I am lacking the most is knowing how to interact with clients during a shoot, to get the best expressions out of them. I find it very difficult to get easy going, relaxed expressions from clients who don’t enjoy being in front of the camera.

  87. Sharon on May 11, 2010 at 10:23 am

I need help with everything, but especially the business end of things.

  88. Mary on May 11, 2010 at 10:23 am

  92. Tiffany on May 11, 2010 at 10:29 am

What do I feel I am lacking….knowing more in photoshop. I get things done but not sure how sometimes and local color casts kick my butt! I also lack in biz…marketing, organization, bookkeeping. I’m doing the best I can but probably not as efficiently as I could.

  93. Heidi B on May 11, 2010 at 10:31 am

What part of my photography training do I feel is lacking? Well for photography itself, I would have to say posing is something would love to learn more about. For a photography business in general, I would say marketing.

  98. Ally on May 11, 2010 at 10:34 am

First would be managing the business side of my business boy that gives me a headache just speaking of it. I also would love some help in the lighting area. yes I know how to find the shade, back lighting but know how to use that light on my subjects face and even throwing in some ocf would be nice too.

  99. Lindsay on May 11, 2010 at 10:36 am

the area that i feel my photography training in lacking is in the studio. i’ve had a hard time experimenting with the lights and how to get them to look right in the picture. part of it is that i don’t have the money to buy the exact equipment that i need or the backgrounds so i’ve had to just use what i’ve got. they are professional lights but not what i’ve seen a lot of the big name photographers use.

  100. Becca on May 11, 2010 at 10:36 am

I think I’m lacking mostly on the business side of things. However, I also know I still need a lot more work/practice on the technical side of taking pictures as well . . .

Lighting and Post-Processing. working the light available to you at the time of shooting and just the basic post-processing rules. i feel i can get some decent shots, but they are lacking that “wow” factor that only a professional photoshopper can get.

I’ve really been working at it, but I would still say I’m lacking when it comes to working in manual mode. I go over those things over and over, but I just can’t seem to grasp it, so it seems to be more guess work for me right now. I come out with decent pictures, but I would really like to have a clearer understanding of what I’m doing.

  128. Julie on May 11, 2010 at 11:05 am

I feel the thing I am lacking is definatly lighting, and being comfortable with clients. I sometimes feel like a bumbling photographer who just cant get my thoughts out of my mouth.. also finding my postprocessing style… I just love to experiment with so many things i cant stay consistant…

  156. Kirsti Fleming on May 11, 2010 at 11:21 am

I am desperately lacking in the area of the technical side of my camera…when to use what settings is what I struggle with. Thanksfully my real job is as a Business Manager, so I have that knowledge base, but when and how to change my settings is where I need serious help! And unfortunately the D90 Auto Setting is spectacular so it’s become a crutch for me! 🙁

There are two areas that I would LOVE, LOVE, LOVE to become more educated in: creative posing and how to run a business. I have worked really hard to understand the technical side of photography, but it’s the creative side I struggle with. And let’s be honest, what average person KNOWS how to run a successful business? Not me!

  159. Kimberly on May 11, 2010 at 11:22 am

I am totally lacking in my knowledge of lighting. I would love to take better pictures inside.

  164. Robyn on May 11, 2010 at 11:24 am

I feel that the area I am lacking in is an in depth understanding of how to use light and how to get different “looks” using light, techniques and the limited equipment that I have. Would loooooooove more “hands on” instruction in this area.

  165. Terri Q on May 11, 2010 at 11:25 am

Lighting – sometimes I wonder if I’ll ever learn enough about lighting.

  166. Lori K on May 11, 2010 at 11:26 am

I struggle with controlling my light (not sure if that makes sense), and it could be because my subjects are my children, who rarely stay still. I find myself constantly changing my settings on manual as they move around, but not really getting a consistent shot.

  167. pam on May 11, 2010 at 11:26 am

I have an eye for composition but need the technical aspects especially lighting and being more familiar with my camera. This education series is exciting because it is a great opportunity to finally get off the sidelines. Not that I can’t use tips on composition but knowing how to produce what I see in my head consistently is the main thing.thanks!

  168. Amber on May 11, 2010 at 11:27 am

In terms of me being ready to start a photography business, the main thing missing in my education is BUSINESS. I recently got my first paying gig and had to literally go online to find a photography contract, figure out pricing. In terms of shooting, probably studio lighting is my weakest area.

I think there isn’t quite enough info in the world on making the switch from aperture priority or shutter priority to 100% manual (even when you know the function of each, what to set it at/ when, etc.)! I also think lighting is tricky & would love to learn more about using not only natural light to enhance pictures, but also studion light. what to do with the picture in the editing phase is a biggie, too. I try not to do too much or too little & often wonder – have I really helped my picture or have I hurt it? I’d love the workshop! Or book!

I am lacking in the marketing aspect and posing. I look in magazines and catalogs to be inspired for various poses and only wish I could afford some of the beautiful (but expensive) posing guides that are out there. 257. michelle on May 11, 2010 at 12:43 pm

The aspect of my photography training I feel is lacking is the increased confidence from understanding the industry. I look around and feel as if there are sooooo many photographers, but I don’t just want to be “another” photographer who “has a nice camera.” Competitive advantage in any business is important. Brand recognition helps, but there is so much more I would like to learn about building the foundation of a solid photography business.

i feel i do not know what looks good when it comes to posing or how to tell people how to postion themselves or when there is a group i get your rss feed and am a fan on facebok

  261. rebecca on May 11, 2010 at 12:54 pm

definitely directing subjects to pose. need help!!

  262. Susana on May 11, 2010 at 12:55 pm

I need to work on focusing faster (or how to adjust faster) for those quick shots when working with kids and animals. They are so spontaneous! I also follow on FB 🙂

  263. wayoutnumbered on May 11, 2010 at 1:00 pm

I’m sooo lacking in the post processing technical aspects of formatting & shooting…14 bit?….16 bit?….all the sizing & converting options….I need help!

  264. Marelis on May 11, 2010 at 1:01 pm

I’m definitely a beginner and could use training on all aspects! I’m going to school currently for my degree in Art- Photography Concentration. I’d say the thing I’d really like to learn or train on the most would be just the basic technical stuff on how to use my camera and really take advantage of all the features it has to offer.

  265. Ally on May 11, 2010 at 1:02 pm

I would really like to know how to work in full sun when the need arises. I also really would like to have someone judge my shots and let me know things like if I had done this angle or tried the light from this side, the picture would be better… That sort of thing… And really I feel I could use help in all areas, but those two are the first things that stand out.

  266. Lindsay on May 11, 2010 at 1:03 pm

I feel that the aspect of my photography that is most lacking is my ability to take the candid shots. I can pose people (somewhat) but I really long for “the shot” that is purely candid in EVERY shoot!

  267. Anne on May 11, 2010 at 1:06 pm

Working with models and the business end of photography. I desperately want to learn it all! 🙂

I definitely need improvement in a few areas. 1) Focus. No matter what lens I use, I struggle to get accurate focus. Not sure if I have a really shaky hand or what. 2) Post processing/My style. I jumped into photography too fast and never developed my own style. I know what I want my photos to look like, but I’m struggling to achieve that look.

Sales and how to make people feel the price you are charging is worth the price they are going to pay. I would like to have more training and the confidence in my prices and aide people in feeling like they are making a purchase worth while. I hear all the time from people…”well the school photographer wants $35.00 for their digital file…come on?!*@#. No one thinks our images are worth a dime cause they have dslr’s. Wish people knew I had invested in their images $150,000.00 in camera equipment, background, prop, lighting, lenses, flash, battery, computer, software, desks, chairs, etc.

What aspect of your photography training do you feel is lacking?I feel I could improve on everything. I have a great eye and I know most of the basics but I know there is much more to learn. I will never know everything. I could work on my technical skills in camera as far as nailing my settings and my post processing.

  372. Alison on May 11, 2010 at 3:27 pm

I believe the area I lack in is post-processing. I tend to over-think a shoot and of course over-shoot, this will correct itself as I gain the confidence needed for this business!

  381. Kahla on May 11, 2010 at 3:31 pm

I basically want to learn more about EVERYTHING. I am self taught and still learning. I think mostly just learning how to make consistently sharp and clear images. Also, techniques to capture subjects in motion. To actually learn from someone who knows what they are doing about ISO and F-Stops, would help out a lot too. I am slowly figuring it out, but I haven’t actually mastered it. I pretty much know the basics of what settings work in what situations, but I would like to learn it more in depth. I need the confidence in knowing what I am doing so that confidence is portrayed in photo sessions.

WOW…I’m probably lacking in many areas but if I had to pick one I guess it would be creativity…or knowing what looks good when shooting. 🙂

I have always had a love for photography, but have mainly just taken pictures for myself. Now that people have seen some of what I do and they like my pics they keep asking me if I take pictures of kids and families. I have no clue on where I would even start because usually I take sports, objects, places. I need work on the flow and interaction for acutal sittings for families and kids. Please help 🙂

  402. Kendra on May 11, 2010 at 3:41 pm

I am definitely lacking confidence! I have taken one beginners class when I got my first SLR probably five years ago. I learned all the basics. I grew up with cameras in my face all the time, because my mother was a photographer and her husband was/is a photographer. I know I can make good photos, but I still need a boost to make this a career. I want to pursue this full time, but lack the confidence to even get started.

  403. Melissa Abbey on May 11, 2010 at 3:45 pm

I have no formal photography training. I’ve participated in shoot togethers and avidly follow sites that teach technique and offer free tutorials about the fundamentals. I would personally say that I could use a true training course focusing on the fundamentals.

The business side. I am not sure what items I need to operate – licences to purchase, forms for taxes, etc. I am so scared to make the leap into the business world as opposed to just doing it for fun (but free) because I don’t want to get into trouble by forgetting or not knowing something.

  427. Michell King on May 11, 2010 at 4:01 pm

Post processing…ie whether it is in Lightroom, photoshop or gimp, what can I use to make the colors ‘richer’…I feel like there is SO much to absorb.

I am in need of so much education when it comes to photography. It’s a serious passion, but I’m lacking in so many areas that I’m not sure I can say what I need most. Lighting (natural and artificial) would be a big one. I’ve learned a lot of technical in the last couple years but still need so much more education in that area as well. And for good measure, let’s throw post-processing (so it’s not overdone) in too. 🙂

I’m lacking in some of the basic tricks that real photographers do each time to get a great shot, plus understanding all the options of what to do with the photo after it’s been edited, plus the business side, and there’s more…

  546. Abbey on May 11, 2010 at 7:30 pm

I would have to say I have lots to learn about how to turn this into a business. I’ve come to realize taking pictures is one area, but there’s a whole lot more to turning this passion into something that will attract people.

  547. GayleV on May 11, 2010 at 7:33 pm

I probably need the most help with posing adult subjects. With photography, I feel like I am always learning new things–even after 6 years. Posing adults is just something that I am trying to work on right now. I am sure I will find new things to learn later.

I would love to take a weekend seminar on photography, and how to combine the elements (light, exposure, shutter speed and ISO) to get the perfect picture. I am currently trying to learn everything about Lighting and using a flash.

  560. Bob wyatt on May 11, 2010 at 8:09 pm

  561. Martina Frankovits on May 11, 2010 at 8:13 pm

I think for me I really need to work on the business side of things. I still have so much to learn within the whole realm of photography but I think it is an ever-evolving process. I have learned so much recently about the technical side of photography which has helped me take my photos to the next level, but now I need to focus on the business portion(i.e. pricing myself, getting clients, getting my name out there, getting incorporated etc). Hope I win!!

  567. Kate on May 11, 2010 at 8:36 pm

I am definitely lacking in post-processing workflow. I am sure there are a million ways to make the process faster, just don’t know all the details. There are a million other things too but that is just the first one that comes to mind.

  570. Heather Bird on May 11, 2010 at 8:53 pm

I have had a lot of “ah ha” moments recently but still feel that I need to fully understand lighting… that perfect “light” and exposing correctly under different lighting scenarious.

  593. Marcia on May 11, 2010 at 10:16 pm

I am lacking in a lot of areas, more so with lighting and directing people. I absolutely love landscape photography and of course you don’t have to direct there. But portrait’s are a different mind set all together. I have people wanting me to take their photos, but after I am finished I don’t feel that I have done the best job I could have. Confidence I need to work on and overall more knowledge in photography.

  603. Jessica T on May 11, 2010 at 10:49 pm

Wow, tough question. I am lacking in many areas. I am a newborn when it comes to photography, just starting to open my eyes and explore the world around me and so far I love what I see! I am really looking forward to learning all there is to learn and read, read, read every chance I get. At this moment I lack the fundamental knowledge of which direction to go first. There is so much to tackle when getting started that I have trouble narrowing the big picture down to my focal point in my business so to speak. I just designed my business cards – seemed an easy place to start, now am working to build a portfolio, after that what’s next??

  622. malia on May 11, 2010 at 11:46 pm

wow, where do i start?! i absolutely know the style of photography that i love & that i’d like to become really good at…the problem is, i’m a beginner – i mean a real beginner, & i feel so overwhelmed as it seems this world of photography is quite complex…education, learning a new camera, the unfamiliar lingo, not to mention do i use photoshop elements or iphoto on my mac…all the while not knowing much, what i do know is that i am totally in love with photography, a few photographers (ashley maxwell, jessica at 503, V & C at simply bloom, just to name a few) & i am so eager to learn (hence i’m taking jessica’s 503 workshop in june – can’t wait, i feel like christmas is around the corner). ok, so i think i’ve answered the question ….& then some 😉 oh btw, on the bright side i do have great business sense, i’ve run million dollar to 10 million dollar businesses over the last 10 years 🙂

  625. Kelley Cook on May 11, 2010 at 11:56 pm

I definately would like to know more about the business aspect of starting my own photography business. I plan to move from teaching to doing photography full time in the next year, and I have gotten educated on my camera, read books, attended workshops (in person and online) studied and mastered various techniques (and still am working on that one…always more to learn), aquired a basic knowlege of how to “see”, manipulate, and capture the lighting on my subject by being in control of my camera in manual mode (rather than letting it tell me what it “sees” as being “correct”, as well as how to enhance my photos through the editing process (with the help of your awesome actions!) My “on-the-side” hobbiest clientele has grown to more than I can keep up with (working a full time teaching job and having 3 young children, 7, 3, and 8 months old.) My confidence has grown so much over the past 5 years and I know the clientelle I wish to bring in and appeal to…I know what I’ve invested in my time, education, equipment, software, etc. and am confident enough to set my prices for what I have invested and what I think my time and talent is worth (not to sound arrogant…I know I still have plenty to learn 😉 I want to know more about how to balance the business aspect of it all…organizing, keeping records, mileage (for on location shoots), taxes, hiring and training help, knowing my rights legally as a photographer (ex. using pics for advertisement i.e. business cards etc.), what to do when someone tries to duplicate your images without permission, is it necessary to have your clents sign a contract/agreement at the time of photo session, examples of contracts/agreements, etc. How to know and exercise my rights while keeping happy customers returning time and time again. My only other concern is that I take way too many pics…I always want one better…so I need advice on how to be more efficient when weeding through and editing. (any “rules of thumb”?) *sorry…didn’t mean to take up the whole comment section! lol*

  626. Annemarie Weishaar on May 12, 2010 at 12:02 am

oh…I would also like advice on designing a website… I’m completely not happy with mine! I just don’t have the direction, know-how or time to redo it the way I’d like it to look (classy and elegant, no right click etc.) right now.and I’m a fan on fb and about to post the contest link! 😉

  628. Lisa on May 12, 2010 at 12:14 am

Off-camera lighting… and the type of training I want with regard to off-camera lighting is practical tips on how to properly diagnose and deal with bad lighting situations that I’m likely to encounter when shooting a wedding or event. Real strategies I can use in the moment. I can always play with the “right settings” later.

  629. Melissa on May 12, 2010 at 12:14 am
