Ricoh is rumored to announce a telephoto zoom lens for Pentax cameras soon. The HD Pentax-D FA 70-200mm f/2.8 lens is expected to become official on February 5.

Update (February 5): Ricoh has announced the HD Pentax D FA 70-200mm f/2.8ED DC AW lens for Pentax full frame DSLR cameras!

A full frame Pentax DSLR camera has been expected to show up on the market for a very long time. Ricoh has said that such device will be released sometime in 2015 during the company’s Photokina 2014 keynote.

However, the company has announced the development of a Pentax DSLR with an APS-C sensor and a couple of lenses for such cameras at the Consumer Electronics Show 2015 in early January 2015.

This has left a lot of people wondering about the company’s past promises. Either way, it seems like one of the optics displayed at CES 2015 is actually designed for full frame cameras. The rumor mill has revealed that the HD Pentax-D FA 70-200mm f/2.8 lens will be announced on February 6 and will be aimed at such DSLRs.

HD Pentax-D FA 70-200mm f/2.8 lens rumored to be announced soon for full frame DSLRs

A highly-trusted source says that Ricoh is on the verge of introducing the HD Pentax-D FA 70-200mm f/2.8 lens. Its product launch event is said to be scheduled for February 5, the same day when Olympus is expected to reveal the OM-D E-M5II mirrorless camera.

This new optic for Pentax cameras bears some interesting designations. “D FA” is unseen in the company’s line-up, but there are speculations suggesting that it represents a new mount designed for full frame DSLRs.

The APS-C lenses have the “DA” designation, which is often referred as “DX” (see Nikon’s case). On the other hand, “FX” cameras are usually full frame models, so it would make sense to name it “FA”.

Moreover, a mysterious star sign is also in the official name of the HD Pentax-D FA 70-200mm f/2.8 lens. According to the source, the star represents the high optical quality of the lens.

As you can see from its name, the optic will feature a maximum aperture of f/2.8 that is constant throughout the zoom range.

Ricoh may announce other Pentax-branded products on February 5

As stated above, Ricoh has displayed one DSLR and three lenses at CES 2015. The large diameter telephoto zoom lens is the aforementioned HD Pentax-D FA 70-200mm f/2.8 lens.

The high-magnification super telephoto zoom lens is said to consist of an 18-300mm f/3.5-6.3 optic, while a standard zoom lens is poised to become available as the 18-50mm f/4-5.6 optic.

The DSLR shown at CES 2015 consists of a K-mount shooter with an APS-C-sized sensor, not a full frame one. The company has said that this camera will be released during Spring 2015.

Well, the good thing is that the information comes from a trusted source, therefore we do not have to wait much longer to find out what’s next from Ricoh and Pentax!
