Panasonic has revealed a new Leica lens for Micro Four Thirds cameras in the small body of the DG Summilux 15mm f/1.7 ASPH to join a very select club.

In the quest of drawing more revenue into its bank accounts, Leica has begun making several lenses for Micro Four Thirds cameras. The DG Summilux 25mm f/1.4 ASPH and DG Macro-Elmarit 45mm f/2.8 ASPH Mega OIS are already available for customers, while the DG Summilux 15mm f/1.7 ASPH has just been announced.

It has been a very busy day for the Japanese manufacturer. The company has introduced the GM1, the smallest MFT system ever, along with the 12-32mm f/3.5-5.6 pancake zoom lens. The trifecta has been completed by the new Leica 15mm f/1.7 optic.

Panasonic reveals Leica DG Summilux 15mm f/1.7 ASPH, a lens designed with the GM1 camera in mind

The new Leica DG Summilux 15mm f/1.7 ASPH lens provides excellent image quality meeting the German company’s standards.

Its exterior has been designed to be sophisticated, just like its internal hardware. However, the looks have also been modified to better suit the new Lumix GM1 shooter.

So close to a perfect launch! Availability details are as scarce as they can be

It is not a pancake lens, instead qualifying for the prime category. If it were to take into consideration the crop factor equivalent, then the optic would provide a 35mm equivalent of 30mm, which is more than suitable for street, landscape, and other photography types.

These marketing words provided by Panasonic are very enticing, but there is a major problem: the company has not announced the release date and the price of the Leica DG Summilux 15mm f/1.7 ASPH.

This is a situation similar to the Leica DG Nocticron 42.5mm f/1.2 one. This lens has been announced several months back, but its availability details remain unknown to us.

Panasonic to launch 35-100mm telephoto zoom lens for Micro Four Thirds cameras soon

Panasonic has ended its press release with the promise that it would launch a Lumix G Vario 35-100mm telephoto zoom lens in the near future. Its design will also be shaped around the GM1, making this camera a very attractive model for a bunch of photographers.

The Panasonic GM1 can be pre-ordered at Amazon for $749.99. This price includes the 12-32mm lens kit.

If you are interested in other Leica Micro Four Thirds optics, then the 25mm f/1.4 model is available for $529, while the 45mm f/2.8 one costs $719.
