Leica has finally announced the M-D Typ 262 digital rangefinder camera, which does not feature a built-in display in order to allow users to focus on the “essentials of photography”.

We heard through the grapevine that Leica would be ready to announce a new camera on March 10. When the launch date came, the device did not. However, sources said that the shooter exists and that it will be unveiled in the near future.

At this point, there are no more delays and the so-called Leica M-D Typ 262 is official. It consists of a digital rangefinder camera, which is a combination between the M Typ 262 and the M Edition 60, as it borrows the former’s specs, but does not have an integrated display, just like the latter.

The idea that led to the creation of this new camera is pretty simple: allow photographers to concentrate on the “absolute essentials of photography”. By removing the LCD screen, users will have to pay more attention to the aperture, ISO, shutter speed, and focus distance. This way, they will rediscover the joy of not knowing how their photos will turn out so soon after capturing them.

The new Leica M-D Typ 262 camera has a quiet shutter and no red dot in the front.

Leica says that it was this anticipation that made post-processing great in the film era. Eventually, it will allow users to become better photographers, as they will try harder to choose the correct exposure settings.

Leica M-D Typ 262 is the first M-series mass-production camera to not have a built-in display. As stated above, the M Edition 60 does not have one and is an M-series device, but it is a limited version and is not aimed at typical consumers. Its price tag is also a testimony to this fact.

Compared to original M Typ 262, the M-D unit features top and bottom plates made out of brass, as well as a very silent shutter. Additionally, there is no red dot in the front, as the manufacturer claims that it wants the shooter to be as unobtrusive as possible.

The specifications are borrowed from the Leica M Typ 262. As a result, the M-D version features a 24-megapixel full-frame sensor with a maximum ISO of 6400 and a Maestro image processor.

Its shutter speed stands between 60 seconds and 1/4000s, while the continuous shooting mode offers up to 3fps. The viewfinder is a typical Leica rangefinder and offers great accuracy when focusing.

Leica M-D Typ 262 does not have an LCD on the back in order to make photographers go back to the essentials of photography.

This shooter is compatible with all M-mount optics and has a hot-shoe mount on top, which allows users to attach external flash guns. Photos will be stored on a SD/SDHC/SDXC card. The German company’s latest digital rangefinder camera measures 139 x 42 x 80mm / 5.5 x 1.7 x 3.1 inches, while weighing approximately 690 grams.

Leica will release the new M-D Typ 262 in a black color by the end of May for a price of $5.995. Alongside the camera, buyers will get a leather strap in which to carry their new photographic gear.
