As the Canon 5Ds and 5Ds R announcement event is nearing, the rumor mill is leaking more information about the upcoming high-resolution DSLRs, suggesting that the 50.6-megapixel sensor is actually designed by Canon and made by Sony.

Update (February 6): Both cameras are now official with 50.6-megapixel sensors!

After months of rumors and speculation, it seems like the big-megapixel Canon DSLR will be announced on February 6. A lot of information about the two high-resolution models has been leaked, including a detailed specifications list and a photo of the 5Ds.

However, this does not mean that there is not enough time to reveal even more Canon 5Ds / 5Ds R details. Contrary to earlier rumors, it appears that the 50.6-megapixel sensor found in these cameras will not be Sony’s work. In fact, it is “designed entirely by Canon” and Sony will simply manufacture it.

The image sensor found in the Canon 5Ds and 5Ds R DSLRs is designed by Canon and made in Sony’s factories.

More Canon 5Ds / 5Ds R details leaked: Canon designed the sensor, Sony will manufacture it

When Canon announced the PowerShot G7 X at Photokina 2014, sources revealed that its 20.2-megapixel 1-inch-type sensor was actually made by Sony.

Shortly after that, some gossip talks have suggested that Canon might use Sony sensors in its future DSLRs. A company executive has hinted that the company will use the best sensor available on the market, regardless of its manufacturer, thus adding more fuel to the fire.

As time went by and the 5Ds / 5Ds R specs have been leaked, insiders have said that the big-megapixel full frame sensor is made by Sony, as Canon and the PlayStation maker have reached a patent exchange agreement.

The new source now says that, while the sensor will be made in Sony’s factories, its design is entirely Canon’s work. We will find out what is truth as soon as the 5Ds / 5Ds R become official, so stay tuned!

Canon 5Ds / 5Ds R to offer 4K time-lapse movie mode

The same source, who said that the sensor is designed by Canon and is made by Sony, has revealed some information that has not been mentioned within the rumor mill so far.

We know that the 5Ds / 5Ds R will capture 5fps in continuous shooting mode and that will offer 1.3x / 1.6x crop modes. According to the source, the DSLRs will be able to shoot up to 7fps in 1.6x crop mode.

We have previously heard that the cameras will come packed with a time-lapse mode. It appears that this mode will support 4K time-lapse videos. It does not mean that it records native 4K footage, it just means that it will be capable of compiling 5-minute time-lapse videos consisting of 9,000 photos captured at 4K resolution.

These are all the new Canon 5Ds / 5Ds R details for now. The official event is getting closer, hence take these with a pinch of salt and do not jump to conclusions, yet.
