Canon is rumored to be developing a new wide-angle zoom lens which will feature a constant maximum aperture of f/2.8 throughout the zoom range.

Two new wide-angle zoom lenses have been announced by Canon earlier in May. The Japanese company has been rumored for a long time to launch plenty of wide-angle optics, so the EF-S 10-18mm f/4.5-5.6 IS STM and EF 16-35mm f/4L IS USM have been unveiled at the right time.

According to inside sources, Canon is not stopping here. The Japan-based corporation is working on even more wide-angle goodies and it seems like the next wide-angle zoom model will feature a fast aperture of f/2.8.

New Canon f/2.8 wide-angle zoom lens coming 6 months after Canon’s big megapixel DSLR

Nikon 14-24mm f/2.8G ED AF-S is one of the highest-praised lenses in the company’s line-up. Canon is working on a new wide-angle zoom lens with a constant aperture of f/2.8. This could mean that Canon will finally provide a true competitor for Nikon’s 14-24mm f/2.8G.

Canon may have launched the new EF 16-35mm f/4L IS USM lens recently. However, this does not mean that the EF 17-40mm f/4L USM lens has been discontinued. The two units will co-exist on the market and the older model will still attract clients as its price stands at only $739 after rebates.

In the meantime, the EF 16-35mm f/4L IS USM model can be pre-ordered for about $1,200 at Amazon. However, it appears that the company is working on an even more expensive unit.

A new Canon f/2.8 wide-angle zoom lens is in development, a source said. However, it will not be released anytime soon. It will be designed for full frame EOS cameras and its release date has been scheduled to take place six months after the company introduces its big-megapixel DSLR.

From what we have heard in the past, Canon will most likely reveal its prosumer-level DSLR with a big megapixel full frame sensor sometime this year. The Photokina 2014 is a possible location, so the new wide-angle zoom optic with f/2.8 aperture might be launched in early 2015.

The next question refers to the focal range of the lens. As a Canon photographer, it is natural to wonder about this topic. Unfortunately, there is no clear focal length other than the fact that it will be shorter than 16mm.

Canon has been patenting a number of lenses, including an EF 14-24mm f/2.8L lens. This is the dream of many EOS DSLR owners. Nikon is offering an amazing 14-24mm f/2.8G ED AF-S lens that has a 4.8-star rating out of 5 at Amazon and a price around $2,000.

It is still baffling that Canon has yet to “replicate” one of Nikon’s highest-praised lenses. An interesting thing that Canon could do would be to go even wider and launch a 12-24mm f/2.8L model.

Either way, this remains in the “rumor” status so take it with a pinch of salt and wait for more information!
