A new Sony QX-series Cyber-shot lens-style camera with 30x optical zoom is rumored to be announced in the near future, joining the QX10 and QX100 in this niche market of cameras that can be attached to smartphones.

Almost the entire world laughed at the digital imaging market when Sony was rumored to launch a camera that looks like a lens and which can be attached to mobile devices.

Their giggles have stopped when both the Sony QX10 and QX100 Cyber-shot lens-style cameras have been introduced. Months after their release date, a company representative has confirmed that sales have gone really well and that Sony is exploring its options on this niche market.

It seems like the Japan-based manufacturer has reached a conclusion. An unnamed source has revealed that a new Sony QX camera with 30x optical zoom is in development and will be unveiled in the near future.

Sony QX10 and QX100 lens-style cameras are rumored to be joined by a model with a 30x optical zoom lens sometime in the near future.

The Sony QX100 features a 3.6x optical zoom lens and a 1-inch-type 20-megapixel image sensor, whereas the Sony QX10 comes packed with a 10x optical zoom lens and 1/2.3-inch-type 18-megapixel sensor.

We must admit that there are little choices to make this a complete series. Perhaps the most obvious of them is a superzoom model and a 30x optical zoom lens is just about right, as it would not be too big, thus it would not become a burden for a smartphone or tablet.

The size and megapixel count of the sensor have not been mentioned therefore it is no point in speculating regarding this matter.

Meanwhile, the QX10 and QX100 are getting on with their lives, having received their fair share of firmware updates.

The latest version was launched on April 14, 2014. Firmware version 3.00 is available for both cameras with support for true full HD video recording in MP4 format, enhanced NFC One-Touch connectivity, more ISO sensitivity settings, and Half-Press support for the shutter button.

Sony’s low-end model, the QX10, comes with a 35mm focal length equivalent of 25-250mm and a maximum aperture of f/3.3-5.9. The QX100 is the higher-end model and it offers a 35mm focal length equivalent of 28-100mm and a maximum aperture of f/1.8-4.9.

Amazon is selling the QX10 for a price around $200, while the QX100 is being sold for about $450.
