Nikon has announced the AF-S Nikkor 200-500mm f/5.6E ED VR super-telephoto zoom lens in order to deliver an affordable solution to wildlife, action, and sports photographers.

The first lens of the day for Nikon has been the AF-S Nikkor 24-70mm f/2.8E ED VR. The Japan-based company is now unveiling its second optic today and it is different than the standard zoom unit. It consists of the AF-S Nikkor 200-500mm f/5.6E ED VR super-telephoto zoom lens.

This optic has had its photo and specs leaked last week. The rumor mill has been right this time, too, and the Nikon 200-500mm f/5.6E ED VR lens has arrived as a solution for photographers who want to get closer to birds and fast cars without taking a step forward.

Nikon 200-500mm f/5.6E ED VR lens is a new super-telephoto zoom lens that will help photographers capture birds in flight and other fast-moving subjects in focus with ease.

Just like the AF-S Nikkor 24-70mm f/2.8E ED VR, the new AF-S Nikkor 200-500mm f/5.6E ED VR has been designed for FX-format DSLR cameras, but it will be compatible with DX-format shooters.

The new product has a constant maximum aperture of f/5.6 throughout the zoom range. It offers electromagnetic aperture control, thus allowing the optic to perform better in continuous shooting mode as it maintains constant exposure levels.

Additionally, the optic comes with a Vibration Reduction mechanism that will provide up to 4.5-stops of stabilization and a Sport Mode to make sure that action shots will turn out great in all scenarios.

An important tool is the zoom lock. Among other things, it makes sure that the zoom remains locked at 200mm, as gravitation might make it to extend the focal length during transportation.

The internal design of the Nikon 200-500mm f/5.6E ED VR lens consists of 19 elements in 12 groups with three Extra-Low Dispersion elements and Nano Crystal Coat to increase the image quality.

This optic has a minimum focusing distance of 2.20 meters / 7.2 feet and a focus distance limiter, making sure that your shots are always in focus. Its focusing mechanism is internal, so the front element does not move when focusing.

AF-S Nikkor 200-500mm f/5.6E ED VR comes with a 95mm filter thread. It measures 108mm in diameter and 268mm in length, while weighing 2,300 grams / 5.07lbs. It is worth noting that the lens is not weathersealed, so users will have to be careful in dusty or rainy conditions.

Nikon has confirmed that will release this super-telephoto zoom lens around the middle of September for the rather affordable price tag of $1,399.95.
