Nikon has taken the wraps off of the AF-S Nikkor 400mm f/2.8E FL ED VR super-telephoto lens as well as the AF-S Teleconverter TC-14E III, capable of extending a lens’ focal length by 1.4x.

Just like the rumor mill has predicted, the new Nikon 400mm f/2.8E FL ED VR lens has been announced along with the Nikon 1 S2 mirrorless camera. However, what nobody saw coming was the AF-S Teleconverter TC-14E III, an extender that multiplies the focal length of a lens by 1.4x.

Nikon AF-S 400mm f/2.8E FL ED VR lens has been launched for action and wildlife photographers with a keen eye for high optical quality.

Photographers using a Nikon DSLR already have a 400mm f/2.8 lens at their disposal. The company has felt that it is necessary to launch a replacement that delivers better performances and improved handling.

The new Nikon 400mm f/2.8E FL ED VR lens is based on a new optical design with enhanced and more accurate autofocus among others.

There are two fluorite elements and a couple of ED (Extra-Low Dispersion) elements among other parts in the lens. They are joined by a Nano Crystal Coat and they work together to reduce chromatic aberration and flaring.

Nikon’s new super-telephoto lens employs an electromagnetic diaphragm, hence the “E” designation. It calls for more “stable exposures” when using a camera in continuous shooting mode.

New Nikon 400mm f/2.8E FL ED VR lens is lighter, but more expensive than its predecessor

Nikon has confirmed that the new lens sports built-in Vibration Reduction technology. The VR system will provide up to four f-stops of stabilization. Additionally, a VR Sport Mode is available and will know when the photographer is panning, so will adjust the stabilization system accordingly.

A major advantage over its predecessor consists of its weight. The Nikon 400mm f/2.8E FL ED VR lens is roughly two pounds / 816 grams lighter when compared to its forerunner.

The smallest aperture stands at f/22, while the minimum focusing distance is set at 260 centimeters / 102.36-inches. Total weight reaches 3,800 grams / 8.38 lbs, while the length stands at 358mm / 14.09-inches and the diameter stands at 160mm / 6.28-inches.

The Japanese maker will release its super-telephoto lens in August 2014 for a price of $11,999.95. It seems like it will not be here in time for the 2014 World Cup, though Amazon has already listed it for pre-order at the aforementioned price.

Nikon 400mm f/2.8G ED VR II AF-S SWM lens version, the predecessor of the new model, is still available at Amazon for a considerably smaller price of $8,999.

Nikon also unveils AF-S Teleconverter TC-14E III that multiplies focal lengths by 1.4x

Nikon’s new AF-S Teleconverter TC-14E III can extend the focal length of a lens by 1.4x at the cost of one stop of light.

On the other hand, the Nikon AF-S Teleconverter TC-14E III has become official, too. It is a 1.4x teleconverter that will extend the focal length of a lens by 1.4x, as its name is suggesting.

It is a durable and high-quality accessory that has been designed to work with telephoto lenses. Just like the new AF-S Nikkor 400mm f/2.8E FL ED VR lens, it is resistant to dust, dirt, moisture, and water droplets.

This accessory weighs 190 grams / 0.42 lbs and measures 64mm / 2.52-inches in diameter. Its total length stretches to 25mm / 0.96-inches.

We should note that extending your focal length comes at a cost, as it will reduce the maximum aperture by one f-stop. Those of you who are willing to make this trade can do so as of August 2014 for a price of $499.95 and you can pre-order it right now at Amazon.
