Nikon has announced a new standard zoom lens in the body of the AF-S DX Nikkor 16-80mm f/2.8-4E ED VR that offers high image quality alongside versatility.

As the rumor mill had predicted, Nikon unveiled a new standard zoom lens for DX-format DSLRs. The new AF-S DX Nikkor 16-80mm f/2.8-4E ED VR continues the legacy of the 16-85mm f/3.5-5.6G with a faster aperture, albeit being 5mm shorter at the telephoto end.

The Japan-based company is referring to this product as the world’s lightest 5x optical zoom lens to feature a maximum aperture of f/2.8 at the widest focal length. Additionally, the manufacturer praises the optic’s versatility as it will be useful in all photographic scenarios.

Nikon reveals first DX-format lens with Nano Crystal Coat and electromagnetic diaphragm

The AF-S DX Nikkor 16-80mm f/2.8-4E ED VR is the company’s first lens for DX-format cameras to come packed with a Nano Crystal Coat, which is reflected in the gold “N” marking on it. This coating will reduce flare and ghosting in order to increase image quality.

The lens is covered in a fluorine coating, too. This means that users will find it easy to clean the optic from dirt, moisture, and other types of smudges. Although it is not weathersealed, it comes with Vibration Reduction technology, so it will be useful for outdoor, action, and sports shooting.

Additionally, this standard zoom optic is the first in the DX line-up to employ an electromagnetic diaphragm. The “E” designation means that the aperture is electronically set directly in the lens for more consistent results.

Nikon’s newest addition to the DX-format lens line-up remains a compact and lightweight model when compared to its predecessor. It weighs 480 grams, the lightest 5x optical zoom lens with a maximum aperture of f/2.8 at the widest focal length, while the 16-85mm f/3.5-5.6G weighs 485 grams.

The AF-S DX Nikkor 16-80mm f/2.8-4E ED VR features four ED (Extra-Low Dispersion) elements along with three aspherical elements, which are all meant to offer a high image quality. The autofocus drive consists of a Silent Wave Motor delivering quick, silent autofocusing.

In total, there are 17 elements in 13 groups with support for internal focusing, meaning that the front lens element does not move when focusing. The aperture is brighter than the one of its forerunner and it consists of a 7-blade rounded diaphragm.
