Nikon is working on a successor to the amazing Coolpix P900 superzoom bridge camera, which will reportedly feature a 100x optical zoom lens.

The Coolpix P900 is one of the most exciting digital cameras of recent times. The shooter was well-received on the market, as it quickly became a best-seller in its category, thanks to an 83x optical zoom lens, which delivers a full-frame equivalent of 2000mm at the telephoto end.

This reach is quite impressive and consumers like it. Well, its placement will be even more impressive. Nikon has patented a new lens for a compact camera with a 1/2.3-inch-type image sensor and the product in question features a 100x zoom range.

Nikon Coolpix P900 successor rumored to come packed with 100x optical zoom lens

It is hard to encounter people that are not impressed by the 83x zoom lens of the Coolpix P900. If you focus on the moon and zoom in at the maximum focal length, then you will even see Earth’s rotation.

Nikon patented a 100x optical zoom lens for the replacement to the Coolpix P900 camera.

We have reasons to believe that the Nikon Coolpix P900 successor will be better than its predecessor. The Japan-based company has patented a 100x zoom lens in September 2014 and it has received the approval on April 28, meaning that it can go ahead and develop the final product.

The optic has been created for cameras with a 1/2.3-inch-type sensor and it has a focal length of 4.4-440. Taking the crop factor into consideration, the lens will provide a focal range equivalent of approximately 24-2400mm.

It is worth pointing out that the current generation offers a 35mm equivalent of 24-2000mm, therefore the new unit will gain something at the telephoto end, while things remain unchanged in the wide-angle sector.

Nikon’s patent application also says that the maximum aperture will stand at f/2.8-8.3, depending on the selected focal length. One can say that things have not changed here, too, as the P900 has a maximum aperture of f/2.8-6.3. It is natural that the top aperture is darker at the telephoto end, as the focal length has increased.

There are no other details about the Nikon Coolpix P900 successor from the rumor mill. As for speculation, we are not expecting the bridge camera to become official this year. The original unit was introduced in mid-2015 and it would be too soon to be replaced in 2016.

It will take a while before the first batch of specs appear online. It will be interesting to see what Nikon will do with this series, while we are still waiting for Canon’s PowerShot SX70, which is supposed to also have a 100x optical zoom lens.
