Nikon has finally revealed the Df full frame camera which combines the looks of classic SLR shooters with the features of modern DSLRs.

Many Nikon photographers have turned to forums to ask Nikon to make a DSLR with a retro design. There are lots of people who love that classic look and they are willing to spend a lot of money on such a product.

The Japanese manufacturer has listened to these prayers and it has finally delivered a solution, which has been rumored in the past couple of weeks. It is called Nikon Df and it consists of a modern DSLR with retro SLR-like looks.

Nikon brings together retro SLR design and modern DSLR features into the Df full frame camera

Nikon has announced the FX-format Df as a camera combining the F-series style with the features of multiple DSLRs, such as the D4, D610, and D5300.

The shooter comes packed with a 16.2-megapixel 35mm image sensor, a 39-point autofocus system, and an EN-EL14 battery, respectively.

Its sensor is here to provide a broad dynamic range, while the AF system is aiming to provide accurate and speedy focusing regardless of shooting conditions, the company says.

Nikon Df top dials allow users to set shutter speed, aperture, and exposure compensation

The design takes us back multiple decades and it includes dials for most exposure settings, including aperture, shutter speed, and exposure compensation, all of which will make a clicking sound while being adjusted.

There are dials for the ISO, exposure and release modes. The sensitivity ranges between 100 and 12,800, but it can be extended through built-in settings to 204,800.

Shutter speed scale sits between 1/4000 and 30 seconds. If you are aiming towards action and sports, then you will be able to do so with a continuous shooting mode of up to 5.5fps.

Lightest and smallest Nikon full frame DSLR camera

Nikon Df is powered by an EXPEED 3 image processor and the photos can be framed using a large pentaprism with 100% coverage. Additionally, photographers can use a 3.2-inch 921k-dot LCD screen for that. However, there is no movie mode, as the rumor mill has predicted.

Users can get creative using built-in Picture Controls and HDR mode among others. It can take multiple shots and combine them to increase the tone range. As expected, the camera shoots RAW to allow lensmen to edit their shots, just in case some minor things require adjustments.

This is the lightest and smallest full frame DSLR camera in the company’s line-up. It is based on a magnesium alloy chassis with leather textures for both the top and grip.

Nikon reveals Special Edition Nikkor AF-S 50mm f/1.8G lens

The new Nikon Df will work with modern-day lenses as well as retro non-AI models. There is a metering lever on the bayonet and will allow photographers to use their “ancient” optics down to their full aperture.

Speaking of lenses, the Japanese company has revealed a new Nikkor AF-S 50mm f/1.8G. It is a Special Edition that has been designed to have compatible looks with the Df camera.

A bright optic is more than welcomed, as there is no built-in autofocus light or flash, so the large aperture, as well as the high ISO, could prove useful in low-light conditions.

Release date, price, and availability details

Nikon has announced that the Df will become available in silver and black colors by the end of November.

The price stands at 2,749.95 for body-only, $2,999.95 for the Nikkor AF-S 50mm f/1.8G lens kit, while the optic will also be released separately for $279.95.

Amazon has begun taking pre-orders for the Df at the price of $2,746.95, while B&H Photo Video has joined the party with the same price tag.
