Will Nikon replace the Nikkor 18–35mm f3.5–4.5D ED FX lens?

The rumor mill is suggesting that Nikon will reveal one or more lenses at the upcoming event, in order to replace some older gear, like the Nikkor 18-35mm f/3.5-4.5D ED lens.

Features of the new Nikkor lens

Even though Nikon was expected to launch more DX-format equipment this year, it has been reported that the company will launch at least one FX-format lens. The gear that is rumored to be revealed at the CP+ 2013 show in Japan, is called Nikkor 18-35mm f/3.5-4.5G ED.

The new lens is supposed to replace the older Nikkor 18-35mm f/3.5-4.5D ED lens, which is available on the market since 2000. Worldwide retailers are still selling this product at a hefty price, thus many photographers will be taken by surprise by this announcement.

More technical details

Source says the new Nikkor lens will have a 77mm filter size and 12 elements divided into eight groups, taking the total weight to less than 400 grams. The current lens features 11 elements in eight groups, while weighing 370 grams. Most photographers will appreciate the similar focal length and weight, when compared to the previous generation.

The  Nikkor 18-35mm f/3.5-4.5D ED lens also sports a wide view angle between 62 degrees and 100 degrees along with 0.15x magnification. It remains to be seen what novelties will be added by Nikon into the new “G” lens. An important change might be made to the minimum focus distance, which currently stands at 33 centimeters, but there is no information regarding this aspect.
