Nokia has practically confirmed that its July 11 event will finally see the EOS 41-megapixel smartphone announced for photography enthusiasts.

There is no secret that digital camera sales have dropped. This fact has triggered an unprecedented chain of events, forcing manufacturers, such as Olympus, Panasonic, and Fujifilm, to kill their low-end compact series.

Smartphone sales are “killing” low-end digital cameras

The main reason why consumers are no longer buying cameras is the recent smartphone emergence. Millions of high-end mobile devices are sold and their image sensors are capturing decent shots, which can be quickly shared on social networks.

Since cameras are bigger and not-so-social-network-friendly, most people are choosing to buy a more expensive phone, rather than purchasing a pair of low-end devices (cheap smartphone + cheap camera).

Words of a so-called Nokia EOS have been heard for a long time, but it seems like its time has finally arrived. The Finnish firm is holding an event on July 11 and all evidence points to the fact that the 41-megapixel camera phone will be there.

The Nokia EOS 41-megapixel smartphone will capture photos at about 8-megapixel in quality. The rest of the megapixels are useful for oversampling the actual shot, meaning that 100% crops will look like the image has been captured with a full-size DSLR.

The zoom reinvention might also refer to the company’s recent investment in Pelican Imaging, a company which makes image sensors capable of Lytro-like light-field photography. Such sensors would allow smartphones users to refocus their photos after taking them.
