Olympus is rumored to be working on a new 9mm f/2.8 lens that could join the PRO series as a weathersealed optic for Micro Four Thirds cameras.

Olympus has recently started developing PRO lenses. They are high-quality lenses that provide a higher optical quality than usual and they have a price to match.

The first of the series is the 12-40mm f/2.8 PRO lens, while the 40-150mm f/2.8 PRO lens will be released later in 2014.

Shortly after that, the 7-14mm f/2.8 PRO and 300mm f/4 PRO lenses will become available, too. Anyway, if you were to trust a new source, then Olympus would be developing yet another PRO lens: the wide-angle 9mm f/2.8.

Olympus may be developing another 9mm lens, this time being a PRO version

Olympus 9mm f/8 is a fisheye lens that acts as a body-cap. The company is allegedly developing an f/2.8 PRO model for professional photographers.

Earlier in 2014, Olympus has launched a lower-end OM-D camera. It goes by the name of Olympus E-M10 and it is packing interesting features such as 3-inch tilting touchscreen, built-in electronic viewfinder, WiFi, and AF Tracking support.

The Micro Four Thirds camera has been launched alongside three new lenses: a 25mm f/1.8 prime, a 14-42mm f/3.5-5.6 zoom, and a 9mm f/8 fisheye body-cap.

One would argue that there is no point in releasing another 9mm lens. However, we are talking about a PRO optic with a fast f/2.8 aperture, which will be better in almost every aspect than the f/8 unit.

New Olympus 9mm lens could be very expensive, just like all PRO series lenses

For the time being, Olympus has not updated its roadmap, nor has it confirmed any plans to launch another PRO series lens.

If the Olympus 9mm f/2.8 PRO lens is real, then it will probably be available for a rather hefty price tag. The 12-40mm f/2.8 is available for a little under $900 at Amazon, while the 40-150mm f/2.8 does not have a price tag, yet.

It is worth noting that the 9mm f/8 fisheye body-cap lens offers a 35mm equivalent of 18mm and it can be purchased at Amazon for around $100.

Olympus 9mm f/2.8 PRO lens could be weathersealed

The source is claiming that several Olympus 9mm f/2.8 prototypes are in the works. They all feature an aperture ring and sport a metal construction.

If the latter part is true, then the product may be a weathersealed lens, allowing photographers to take photos in the rain.

Either way, take these claims with a pinch of salt and stay tuned for more details!
