Olympus has registered the name of a Micro Four Thirds camera, which is bound to replace the E-M5 in February 2015. The mirrorless shooter appears as Olympus E-M5II at Taiwan’s National Communications Commission, just like the rumor mill has previously reported.

Industry watchers are probably aware that Olympus has confirmed that the E-M5 replacement is ready and will be announced soon during the Photokina 2014 event.

Many people hoped that “soon” meant really soon so the mirrorless interchangeable lens camera would be introduced by the end of 2014. However, the rumor mill has revealed that the device is actually coming sometime in February 2015, before the start of the CP+ Camera & Photo Imaging Show 2015.

As time went by, it was reported that the shooter will be called Olympus E-M5II. An “almost official” confirmation comes from the National Communications Commission in Taiwan, where the Japanese company has registered this codename for the E-M5 successor.

The Olympus E-M5II mirrorless camera has been registered at Taiwan’s NCC, which represents the FCC equivalent in the US.

Olympus registers E-M5II camera in Taiwan, confirming previous rumors

After reporting that Olympus will name the E-M5 replacement as E-M5II, the rumor mill can brag about getting another one right, as the Micro Four Thirds camera has been spotted bearing this name at Taiwan’s NCC by DigiCame.

Usually, when a camera requires radio certification it is safe to assume that it could come packed with built-in WiFi. This is not a certainty for the time being, but it it is a strong possibility, therefore you should not act surprised if this also becomes true next February.

No other information is available from the NCC, therefore we should review what inside sources have had to say about the Olympus OM-D E-M5II in the past.

Olympus OM-D E-M5II will employ 16MP sensor, but will capture 40MP photos

The mirrorless camera will feature an identical 16-megapixel Micro Four Thirds sensor as its predecessor. However, this new device will learn a new trick, as it will come packed with sensor-shift technology, allowing the Olympus OM-D E-M5II to capture 40-megapixel shots.

The way this mechanism is supposed to work is a bit unclear for now, but it appears that the sensor will shift when capturing photos. It will be able to switch to a total of 8 positions and the combined photo will have a resolution of 40 megapixels.

Unfortunately, the device will not capture videos at 4K resolution, albeit new videography features will be added to the camera. Until then, stay tuned to find out the latest Olympus OM-D E-M5II rumors!
