Panasonic is already taking into consideration the future of its mirrorless SLR line-up and it appears that the GH4 replacement could come packed with 4K video recording at 60fps as well as support for 8K video recording.

The Lumix GH4 is the flagship camera in the Panasonic’s line-up. The mirrorless interchangeable lens camera was introduced in 2014 as a device capable of capturing 4K videos at a frame rate of up to 30fps.

The GH4 can capture such footage without the need of an external recorder, meaning that it stores these high-resolution movies directly on its SD card. Despite the fact that the flagship GH camera has just been launched, Panasonic has allegedly started to shape up its replacement.

According to a company representative, the Japan-based company could add 4K video at 60fps and 8K video support in GH4’s successor.

This is the Panasonic GH4, the mirrorless camera with a Micro Four Thirds sensor that is capable of shooting 4K videos at 30fps. Its replacement, dubbed as the GH5, could record 4K movies at up to 60fps and 8K videos.

Panasonic might put 4K at 60fps and 8K video recording capabilities into the GH4 replacement, says rep

The information comes from Tadokoro Yoshifumi, a Panasonic rep who has recently granted an interview to the Map Camera website. The interview is mostly focused on the company’s most recent products, such as the Lumix LX100, Lumix GM5, and the Lumix G 14mm f/2.5 II ASPH lens among others.

Nevertheless, Tadokoro-san has also been asked to give his opinion about the future of the Lumix GH series of mirrorless SLR cameras. The manufacturer’s rep has given a really interesting answer, which will definitely sound exciting to Micro Four Thirds fans.

Tadokoro Yoshifumi is claiming that the Panasonic GH5 could capture 4K videos at a frame rate of up to 60fps. However, the company will not stop here and the next-generation GH mirrorless camera might record 8K videos, too.

Panasonic GH5 still has a lot of time until it becomes official

Although this is just a personal opinion and the words of Panasonic’s representative may not turn into reality, one cannot deny the fact that the company has big plans for the future of its upcoming flagship camera.

While Canon and Nikon have adopted a more cautious approach, it appears that both Panasonic and Sony have decided to put forth the best features possible for the users.

Videos recorded at 4K resolution and 30fps are already looking amazing, so you can only imagine how great things will look at 60fps. For the time being, 8K resolution has been vaguely mentioned by camera makers, but keep in mind that the Panasonic GH5 still has a long way to go before becoming official, so we should not rule out any possibilities.

Stay tuned because exciting times are ahead for the digital imaging industry! Meanwhile, the Panasonic GH4 is available for about $1,700 at Amazon and it includes a myriad of free accessories.
