Panasonic is rumored to be working on the Lumix GH5, its next-generation flagship Micro Four Thirds camera, and to launch it sometime in 2016 with significant improvements over its predecessor.

World’s first mirrorless interchangeable lens camera to record 4K videos is the Panasonic GH4. This Micro Four Thirds shooter was revealed in early 2014 and it has become a best-seller among videographers and photographers alike.

Even before its first birthday, the rumor mill mentioned some information about its replacement back in October 2014. A highly-reliable source is now referring to the mirrorless camera once again, stating that the Panasonic GH5 release date is scheduled to take place sometime in 2016.

Panasonic GH5 release date will take place in 2016, not 2015

Although the Lumix GH4 is not so old and it is a great camera, many people were hoping to see a Lumix GH5 being unveiled by the end of 2015. However, a trusted insider has dismissed these talks and has confirmed that there is no chance for the Micro Four Thirds camera to show up this year.

Panasonic GH4 will be replaced by the GH5 sometime in 2016.

On the other hand, we can expect the device to become official next year. A timeframe has not been given, so the Panasonic GH5 could be revealed towards the beginning of the year, like its predecessor, or sometime around September and Photokina 2016, as this is the world’s largest digital imaging event and it will get a lot of exposure at this show.

No specs for now, but in the past 8K video recording was mentioned

For the time being, there are no leaked specifications about the shooter. However, the source has been able to confirm that the new model will be a major improvement over the existing generation.

It will be hard to top GH4’s specs, but the GH5 has been rumored to be capable of recording videos at 8K resolution. That would be quite an impressive achievement and it remains to be seen whether Panasonic can pull it off or not.

Meanwhile, the Panasonic GH4 is available for purchase at Amazon for a price a little under the $1,500 mark. For this amount, users are getting in-body 4K video recording from a 16-megapixel Micro Four Thirds sensor, 200Mbps bitrate, 25,600 maximum ISO sensitivity, 12fps continuous shooting mode, built-in OLED viewfinder, and a fully-articulated touchscreen.
