Panasonic has officially unveiled the company’s first Micro Four Thirds camera to offer an image sensor with more than 20 megapixels in the body of the 4K-ready Lumix GX8 mirrorless camera.

The rumor mill has recently confirmed that Panasonic will hold a product launch event by the end of this week. The first product to come out is an exciting one as it is the first Micro Four Thirds camera to go over the 20-megapixel milestone. It is called and it comes across as an attracting mirrorless camera with plenty of features that will prove to be useful across many scenarios, including WiFi, 4K recording, dual image stabilization, and an articulated touchscreen.

Skeptical voices have said that Micro Four Thirds sensors will not be able to overcome the 20-megapixel hurdle while keeping noise at bay and the image quality at high levels. However, Panasonic has done it through the Lumix GX8, the first of its kind to offer a 20.3-megapixel Micro Four Thirds sensor.

The mirrorless camera is powered by a Venus Engine that reduces noise even in low-light conditions and that offers quicker sensor readout. Moreover, the new shooter comes with a 1/3-stop more extended dynamic range when compared to its predecessor.

The maximum ISO sensitivity of the Panasonic GX8 stands at 25,600, which is the same value offered by the Lumix GX7. The company promises that images will turn out sharp at all ISOs thanks to Multi-process Noise Reduction technology.

Panasonic puts Dual Image Stabilizer technology into the GX8 for better stabilization

Another major advancement presented in the Panasonic GX8 consists of the Dual IS technology. The Dual Image Stabilizer system combines the camera’s in-body image stabilization technology with the IS technology found in some lenses.

The company has first added an IS system to the Lumix GX7 and now the Lumix GX8 is taking it further. When turned on, the Dual IS technology stabilizes your shots at telephoto focal lengths, not only at wide-angle focal lengths, and it makes sure that low-light photos will turn out blur-free.

For video users, this Micro Four Thirds camera is offering a 5-axis Hybrid OIS+ system even when recording at 4K resolution. The GX7 offered up to full HD video recording, but the newer model offers 4K capturing at up to 30fps.

Lumix GX8 camera now features fast AF with Depth from Defocus support

Panasonic has improved the autofocus system as well. The company has added Depth from Defocus technology into the GX8. DFD allows the Lumix GX8 to determine the correct distance to your subject by taking into consideration two different images with distinct sharpness. This way, the Micro Four Thirds shooter will be able to focus in only 0.07 seconds.

Moreover, Low Light AF is available in the camera and it allows photographers to focus in -4EV conditions without using the GX8’s built-in autofocus assist light.

When capturing portraits, the Panasonic GX8 will be able to automatically focus on a subject’s face or eyes thanks to Face / Eye Detection AF support. As expected, Focus Peaking is present in the camera for even faster autofocusing.

The new Panasonic GX8 features a maximum shutter speed of 1/16000th of a second when using the electronic shutter. A mechanical shutter is available, too, and it supports a top speed of 1/8000s.

The specs list continues with built-in WiFi and NFC for transferring files to a mobile device or for controlling the camera with a smartphone or tablet. P/A/S/M modes are available along with an exposure compensation dial.

The mirrorless camera offers a silent mode, time-lapse photography, stop-motion animation, creative panorama, and in-camera RAW development. There is no built-in flash, but an external one can be attached and the GX8 offers an X sync speed of 1/250s.

Panasonic’s newest Micro Four Thirds member also offers a 12fps continuous shooting mode, an articulated 3-inch 1,040K-dot OLED touchscreen, and a built-in OLED electronic viewfinder.
