Ricoh announces the development of a Pentax full frame DSLR camera

A lot of photographers have been hoping for a Pentax full frame DSLR camera for more than 14 years, ever since the company displayed a prototype at various events in 2001.

In the meantime, Pentax was acquired by Ricoh, further fueling the rumors that an FF shooter is on its way. After some hints and leaked details, Ricoh has stated during the Photokina 2014 event that such camera will be released in 2015.

It appears that this time it is really happening, as the development of a Pentax full frame DSLR camera has been confirmed by its parent company.

The shooter will employ the same K-mount that is available for its APS-C-sized DSLRs. However, its sensor will be bigger and will consist of a 35mm-sized model.

Despite this aspect, the new DSLR will be compatible with all K-mount DA-series lenses, albeit the device will work in crop mode.

The exact release date of the camera has not been confirmed. Nevertheless, the Japan-based company is planning to release it on the market by the end of this year.

A prototype of the Pentax full frame DSLR camera will be displayed at the CP+ Camera & Photo Imaging Show 2015. The event opens its doors in Yokohama, Japan as of February 12. It is one of the biggest and most prestigious imaging events in the world with a history of more than 50 years.

It is unclear whether Ricoh will show off a working prototype at CP+ 2015. However, it is certain that photographers will get a close-up on what the full frame DSLR will look like when it becomes available.

For now, Ricoh has not confirmed any specifications of the Pentax full frame DSLR camera, so we will have to wait for CP+ 2015 for more details. Stay tuned!
