Ricoh has officially unveiled the Pentax K-70 DSLR along with the HD Pentax-DA 55-300mm f/4.5-6.3 ED PLM WR RE lens.

The rumor mill has recently revealed that Ricoh is working on a new Pentax-branded camera. Speculation also pointed towards the launch of a new optic and the rumors are now official.

Pentax K-70 is the name of the DSLR, while the lens consists of an HD Pentax-DA 55-300mm f/4.5-6.3 ED PLM WR RE, both which are likely to be released sometime in the second half of 2016.

Ricoh officializes K-70 DSLR with Hybrid AF module

The new shooter employs a new 24.24-megapixel APS-C CMOS sensor without an anti-aliasing filter, but with 14-bit readout. It is powered by a powerful PRIME MII processor, as it is capable of cutting down noise even at the maximum ISO sensitivity of 102400.

Pentax K-70 is now official with a 24MP sensor.

Ricoh has added a fast autofocusing system in the Pentax K-70. It consists of a SAFOX X unit with 11 points, including 9 cross-type points. This AF module is accurate and can focus even in -3EV conditions.

Additionally, there is a Hybrid AF function that is available in Live View. The sensor has a contrast-detection module on it, allowing photographers to focus on their subjects quickly, accurately even in Live View.

All of these are available in a weathersealed body, that is resistant to freezing temperatures, shocks, dust, and moisture. The speed of the camera is matched by the shutter, which can capture photos at a maximum 1/6000th of a second and a continuous mode of up to 6fps.

WiFi and high-resolution mode can be found in the K-70

The usual in-body Shake Reduction system is available in the new Pentax K-70. It minimizes camera shakes, so photos do not turn out blurry. It is also useful in low-light conditions, when shutter speeds are slower.

Pentax K-70 employs integrated WiFi connectivity.

This technology can be used for mimicking the presence of an anti-aliasing filter. The SR system sends tiny vibrations to the sensor, when the user feels that a scene would produce moiré patterns.

Moreover, the same technology can be used as a Pixel Shift Resolution System. This function can be used for capturing 4 different shots of the same scene, as it shifts the sensor by one pixel. It then composes the shots into a single one, resulting in a high-resolution photo.

The photos can then be shared on social networking websites, courtesy of built-in WiFi and a mobile device. The wireless connectivity is useful for pairing with a smartphone or tablet in order to transfer files or to remotely control the DSLR.

Weathersealed Pentax K-70 to be priced below $650

Pentax K-70 records videos up to full HD resolution, not 4K, as reported. However, there is a 4K mode in there. It is called 4K Interval Movie and it resembles a time-lapse mode, as the camera will capture photos at a user-determined interval and then it creates a time-lapse movie out of them.

Pentax K-70 has a 3-inch vari-angle LCD on its back.

Photographers can compose their shots with an optical viewfinder with 100% coverage, as well as with a 3-inch tilting screen on the back. The DSLR also offers built-in flash, autofocus assist light, and stereo microphone, along with ports for microphone, USB 2.0, and mini HDMI.

The device measures roughly 126 x 93 x 74mm / 4.94 x 3.66 x 2.91 inches, while weighing 688 grams / 1.52 lbs with the battery and SD card included. The battery life is clocked at 410 shots on a single charge.

Ricoh will sell the K-70 for a price of $649.95. The release date is unknown, but the manufacturer promises that it will be confirmed in early July.

Pentax 55-300mm f/4.5-6.3 zoom lens becomes official, too

The HD Pentax-DA 55-300mm f/4.5-6.3 ED PLM WR RE lens for K-mount cameras has also become official. It features a Pulse Motor along with a rear-focusing technology that will deliver faster and quieter AF across the focal range.

HD Pentax-DA 55-300mm f/4.5-6.3 ED PLM WR RE lens will offer a full-frame focal length equivalent of 82.5-450mm.

The new version is about 10% lighter than its predecessor and it is capable of focusing on subjects located at a minimum distance of 95 centimeters. Another ace up its sleeve is the electromagnetic diaphragm, which will come in handy when shooting videos, as it will be completely silent.

There is no surprise that the HD Pentax-DA 55-300mm f/4.5-6.3 ED PLM WR RE lens is weathersealed, so it is inviting everyone to take it outdoors without worrying about its structural integrity.

Ricoh’s new zoom lens has a 77mm diameter, 89mm length, and 58mm filter thread. It weighs 471 grams / 1.04 lbs and it will be sold for a price of $399.95. Just like in K70’s case, the release date will be announced this July.
