September and Photokina 2014 news round-up

September 2014 is now over, which means that Photokina 2014 has come to an end. Here are the most important announcements that have taken place at the world’s largest digital imaging event or during the past month!

All photography fans in the world have been waiting for September 2014 to come. The main reason for that is because the biggest digital imaging trade fair has been scheduled to take place during September 2014.

The biennial Photokina event has opened its doors on September 15 for the press and on September 16 for visitors. All things considered, it has been a great event with numerous launches, so we will break the most important of them to you.

Without much further ado, here is the September and Photokina 2014 news round-up!

The Photokina 2014 news round-up begins with Canon’s 7D Mark II and three lenses

Canon has been one of the most active companies at this year’s Photokina edition. The company has introduced several cameras, including a new DSLR, as well as three new lenses. Here are Canon’s products for the biggest event of the year:

• 7D Mark II: the sought-after replacement of the 7D is official with a 20.2-megapixel APS-C sensor, dual DIGIC 6 processors, Dual Pixel CMOS AF technology, and a brand new 65-point autofocus system;
• PowerShot SX60 HS: another popular camera in Canon’s line-up, the SX50 HS, has been replaced by this beast with a 65x optical zoom lens;
• PowerShot G7 X: this is a high-end compact camera with a 1-inch-type image sensor, which will compete against the Sony RX100 III among others;

Canon EOS 7D Mark II release date and price are November 2014 and $1,799, respectively.

• EF-S 24mm f/2.8 STM lens: an affordable pancake lens aimed at APS-C DSLR cameras;
• EF 24-105mm f/3.5-5.6 IS STM lens: the first standard zoom lens for full frame EOS DSLR cameras to feature a stepping motor (STM);
• EF 400mm f/4 DO IS USM II lens: the second-generation 400mm lens with Diffractive Optics technology, which improves image quality while reducing the size of the lens.

Nikon D750 claims its place between the D610 and D810 cameras

Nikon joined the fun at Photokina 2014 with several new products.. However, the most notable of them is the brand new D750, which is said to be the true successor to the D700.

Nikon D750 is now official with a 24.3-megapixel full frame sensor, that is also packing an anti-aliasing filter.

The Nikon D750 sits between the D600 and the D800 series, and it features a 24.3-megapixel full frame sensor, built-in WiFi, 51-point autofocus system, and dual SD card slot. The camera is available at Amazon right now for a price a little under $3,000.

The Japan-based company has also introduced a new entry-level flash gun: the SB-500 Speedlight, which includes an LED light that can be used for video recording.

Sony launches new QX lens-style cameras, while Zeiss reveals a new Otus model

One of the most active companies at Photokina 2014 was Sony. The PlayStation maker has introduced the QX30 lens-style camera that employs a 30x optical zoom lens.

Moreover, the QX1 is another lens-style camera, but it is actually the first of its kind to support an interchangeable lens mount. Photographers will be able to mount the QX1 on a smartphone and to attach E-mount lenses on it for pro-like photography.

This is the Zeiss Vario-Tessar T* FE 16-35mm f/4 ZA OSS lens. It will be released in November for Sony FE-mount mirrorless cameras.

Sony has also introduced the Zeiss FE 16-35mm f/4 and the FE 28-135mm f/4 G OSS, while announcing the development of multiple other FE-mount optics.

Although it has not been as active as many people would have hoped, Zeiss has brought a few products to the table. The list includes the new Loxia series of FE-mount lenses and the new Otus 85mm f/1.4.

Fujifilm and Samsung have made the mirrorless camera fans proud

Fujifilm had something to say at Photokina 2014, too. The company unveiled the X100T, which represents a replacement for the X100s, the second X-mount weathersealed lens, called 50-140mm f/2.8 R LM OIS WR, and the 56mm f/1.2 R APD lens.

The latter optic has been designed to provide extremely pleasing bokeh. It is a great lens for portrait photography and it is available at Amazon for pre-order at a price under $1,500.

Samsung NX1 sports a 28.2-megapixel sensor, said to be the first APS-C-sized BSI CMOS model in the world.

Samsung has contributed to the mirrorless industry by introducing one of the best shooters in its category. The NX1 has it all: 28.2-megapixel APS-C sensor, 205-point PDAF technology, built-in WiFi, 4K video recording, 3-inch touchscreen, and weathersealing.

The announcement has been complemented by a high-end NX-mount lens. The 50-150mm f/2.8 S lens is official and will be released soon for professionals.

Panasonic and Olympus taking the legacy of the Micro Four Thirds system to new heights

The Micro Four Thirds world has become richer at Photokina 2014. Panasonic has launched the GM5 mirrorless camera, 35-100mm f/4-5.6 and 14mm f/2.5 II lenses, while Olympus has contributed with the 40-150mm f/2.8 PRO lens.

Panasonic LX100 is a new compact camera with a 12.8-megapixel Micro Four Thirds sensor, WiFi, and 4K video recording support.

Panasonic has also announced the first compact camera with a Micro Four Thirds sensor. It is called LX100 and it takes on the Sony RX100 III as well as the aforementioned Canon PowerShot G7 X.
