Sigma is working on a 14mm f/4 wide-angle prime lens which will become available for mirrorless cameras with Micro Four Thirds sensors sometime in late 2015.

While the development of Four Thirds lenses has been halted forever by Sigma, the company is still planning to launch optics for mirrorless cameras using the Micro Four Thirds mount.

There are three Sigma lenses for Micro Four Thirds users on sale at this moment and all of them are prime models. The rumor mill is now claiming that the Japan-based company will add a fourth model to the market in the body of a 14mm f/4 wide-angle prime.

Sigma 14mm f/4 lens rumored to be in the works for Micro Four Thirds cameras

A trusted source is reported that Sigma is developing a 14mm wide-angle prime lens with a not-so-fast maximum aperture of f/4. It will be aimed at landscape and architecture photographers using Micro Four Thirds cameras.

This product is said to be a modified version of the lens that is available in the dp0 Quattro. This is a compact camera made by Sigma which employs a fixed 14mm f/4 wide-angle prime. The insider is stating that the company will modify this lens in order to release it as a standalone version.

The focal length as well as the maximum aperture will remain identical. When mounted on Micro Four Thirds cameras, the Sigma 14mm f/4 lens will offer a 35mm focal length equivalent of 28mm.

The dp0 is the only Quattro-series camera to employ a lens with a maximum aperture of f/4. There are three other models and they all have optics with f/2.8 apertures. The dp1 has a 19mm lens, the dp2 has a 30mm lens, while the dp3 has a 50mm lens.

Sigma poised to announce the 14mm f/4 wide-angle prime later this year

If the Sigma 14mm f/4 lens becomes official, then it will be the company’s fourth lens for mirrorless cameras with Micro Four Thirds sensors.

The other three models are all prime optics with a maximum aperture of f/2.8. The products are as follows: the 19mm f/2.8 with a 35mm focal length equivalent of 38mm, the 30mm f/2.8 with a 35mm equivalent of 60mm, and the 60mm f/2.8 with a 35mm equivalent of 120mm.

The 14mm f/4 would have the widest focal length of the bunch. According to the source, it is expected to show up sometime in late 2015, so stay tuned for further details!
